An endoscopy RN assists during endoscopic procedures. These procedures use tiny cameras to visualize internal structures. The endoscopy nurse helps throughout the process, starting with patient preparation and education. They also prep the procedure room and manage the equipment to ensure it's clean and ready to use. The nurse might administer medication and position and monitor the patient during the procedure. They also walk the patient through the recovery phase and provide post-procedure care instructions.
How do you become an endoscopy RN?
Endoscopy nurses must complete an accredited RN program, pass the National Council Licensure Examination and apply for state RN licensure before pursuing their specialty. RNs need clinical experience in the field to transition to endoscopy nursing. You might gain endoscopy experience during your schooling. General nursing experience can also help you move into the endoscopy specialty. You can become a certified gastroenterology RN after gaining two years of experience.
What credentials/licensing does an endoscopy RN require?
Working as an endoscopy nurse with only an RN license in good standing and Basic Life Support credentialing is possible. Some states and healthcare facilities require the completion of an endoscopy program and/or specialized training in the field following licensing, but RNs can often accomplish this on the job.
Earning additional certifications can open the door to more employment opportunities. The American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses offers the Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse (CGRN) credential. To earn CGRN certification, you need at least 2 years or 4,000 hours of experience working in the specialty and pass an exam.

How can you increase your pay as an endoscopy RN?
Earning a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing can help increase your pay as an endoscopy RN. Some medical facilities prefer at least a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, but a higher educational level, even if it's not required, could increase your starting pay rate. For endoscopy RNs, pursuing a certification from the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses is another way to bump up your pay. Also, taking on administrative or supervisory duties can lead to managerial roles within the gastroenterology department, which often means higher wages.
How much does a staff endoscopy RN make?
Staff endoscopy registered nurses (RNs) could expect to earn about $40.49 per hour, according to Vivian Health's salary data sourced on May 1, 2023. That was just above the national average hourly nursing rate of $39.95 during that period.
Is endoscopy nursing a growing career?
While the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't break down nursing specialties, BLS data in May 2021 predicts an overall employment growth of 6% for RNs within all specialties from 2021 to 2031. Healthcare needs never go away, and various facilities need endoscopy RNs to help diagnose and treat chronic conditions related to the gastrointestinal system.
What types of employers/facilities have the most endoscopy RNs?
Endoscopy RNs work in a variety of settings. Many endoscopy nurses work in hospitals, including general and specialty hospitals. According to May 2022 BLS data, general medical and surgical hospitals employed the most RNs in all specialties, with nearly 31% working in these facilities. Almost another 23.5% worked in specialty hospitals. Endoscopy RNs may also work in other settings, including outpatient facilities, private clinics, specialized treatment units and specialist practices, such as endoscopy labs and gastroenterology offices.
Which employers/facilities have the highest pay?
According to BLS data from May 2022, RNs as a whole found the highest-paying jobs in healthcare facilities at outpatient clinics ($97,200 annually), followed by specialty hospitals ($91,290), then general hospitals ($90,600). However, RNs earned more in industries outside of traditional medical settings, such as wholesale trade ($112,480 annually) and pharmaceutical manufacturing ($110,270), but these roles tend to be for occupational health nurses.
How does endoscopy RN pay compare to similar healthcare jobs?
Endoscopy RNs make roughly the same as the average RN pay, but some specialties earn much more. According to Vivian Health’s salary data from May 2, 2023, pediatric intensive care nurse salaries averaged $42.86 per hour. The pay for cardiology nurses on the same date averaged $41.58 per hour. Nurses have other opportunities within the healthcare system that often pay even higher wages, including case management nursing roles, which paid an average of $44.46 per hour during this same period.

Endoscopy Nurse FAQs
What is an Endoscopy RN?
Endoscopy nurses, sometimes referred to as gastroenterology nurses, assist physicians and other healthcare professionals before, during, and after endoscopic procedures. They’re highly proficient at using all types of endoscopic equipment and are in-demand RN specialists in hospitals, outpatient facilities, specialized treatment centers, and private practices. Although they can expect competitive salaries, an endoscopy RN's salary can vary based on several factors.
Endoscopy nurses are registered nurses who specialize in endoscopic procedures, which are minimally invasive diagnostic procedures utilizing miniature cameras called endoscopes. They assist while endoscopes are inserted into a patient’s oral or anal cavity to assess respiratory or gastroenterological disorders. Endoscopy RNs possess specialized knowledge about various respiratory and gastroenterological diseases and disorders and are skilled at using and maintaining endoscopic equipment, administering medication, and managing emergencies and complications.
Prospective endoscopy nurses must complete the education requirements to become a registered nurse, which includes earning an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Graduates must pass the NCLEX-RN and complete training and certifications in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support.
How an Endoscopy RN salary is based
Healthcare facilities may base an endoscopy RN’s salary on numerous criteria. Years of experience are always a key factor. Entry-level nurses earn less than those who’ve been in the endoscopy field for several years. However, facilities also may factor other types of experience into salary considerations. For example, some institutions prefer nurses with critical care experience to work in endoscopy and base salaries may reflect this additional experience.
Endoscopy RNs with additional skills and education also may have higher base salaries. Specialty organizations like the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates offer endoscopy training that covers endoscopic equipment, specific endoscopy procedures, conscious sedation, and emergency management. Specialized training often yields valued skills and salary increases. Plus, endoscopy nurses with a BSN instead of an ADN may have a slightly higher base salary at healthcare facilities that prefer nurses with a four-year degree.
Base salary can also fluctuate based on location, which includes job location and facility location. Many endoscopy RNs work in hospitals, which often offer higher salaries and more opportunities for advancement than smaller medical clinics. Geography often plays a bigger role. Medical facilities in large metropolitan areas pay more compared to rural facilities in small towns because hospitals in urban areas are typically better funded. Additional funding allows these facilities to offer endoscopy RNs higher salaries and more competitive insurance and benefits that many rural facilities simply can’t afford to provide.
Nationwide, California traditionally pays nurses in every specialty more than other states. However, this state also has one of the highest costs of living nationwide. Cost of living should always be considered when balancing location and salary. Other West Coast states and some New England and East Coast states also tend to have higher base salaries. However, endoscopy nurse salaries were higher in Minnesota, Nevada, and South Dakota in November 2021.
How to increase your Endoscopy RN salary
Although there isn’t a graduate program specifically for endoscopy nursing, RNs can still obtain higher education to propel their career and boost their salary. Nurses who earn a Master of Science in Nursing degree may parlay this into an adult, family, or acute care nurse practitioner program, then work in endoscopy after graduating. Advanced practice nursing roles, such as a nurse practitioner, demand higher salaries.
Professional certifications are an excellent way to increase your endoscopy RN salary. Although it’s not usually a job requirement for endoscopy nurses, certification demonstrates competency in the field. Plus, certified nurses often earn significantly more than their uncertified colleagues.
Endoscopy RNs can pursue a Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse designation from the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses to advance their careers, improve their patient skills, and increase their salary. CGRN certification is open to RNs currently working in GI/endoscopy. To qualify, candidates only need to have been employed in GI/endoscopy in an institutional or private practice setting for at least two years full-time or 4,000 hours part-time within the past five years. They must submit contact information for two practitioners in the specialty who can verify their work experience.
