Job Title: Surgical Technologist – Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR Surg Tech) Job Summary:
A CVOR Surgical Technologist specializes in assisting with cardiovascular surgeries in the operating room, ensuring that surgical procedures involving the heart and vascular system run efficiently and safely. This role requires advanced technical skills, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of cardiovascular anatomy, surgical instruments, and equipment. The CVOR Surg Tech works closely with the surgical team to prepare, maintain, and assist during cardiac and vascular operations.
Key Responsibilities:Preoperative Preparation:
- Set up the cardiovascular operating room with specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies required for heart and vascular surgeries.
- Verify the functionality of devices such as heart-lung machines, monitors, and catheters.
- Ensure strict adherence to aseptic and sterile techniques to prepare the surgical environment.
- Review the surgical schedule and patient-specific requirements to anticipate needs.
Intraoperative Support:
- Pass instruments, sutures, and devices to the surgeon promptly during cardiovascular procedures.
- Assist with maintaining a sterile field and ensuring proper use of surgical drapes and barriers.
- Handle and care for specialized cardiovascular equipment such as bypass machines, cannulas, and pacemakers.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during complex procedures, such as open-heart surgery, valve replacements, or vascular bypasses.
Postoperative Duties:
- Clean and restock the CVOR, ensuring all instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and stored.
- Assist in transporting patients from the CVOR to recovery units.
- Handle specimens and ensure proper labeling for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain and troubleshoot cardiovascular equipment to ensure readiness for future use.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and perfusionists to ensure a seamless surgical workflow.
- Participate in pre-surgical briefings and post-surgical debriefings.
- Support training and mentoring of junior staff or surgical technologist students as needed.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow strict infection control and safety protocols to protect patients and staff.
- Stay updated on advancements in cardiovascular surgical techniques and technology.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Education: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent training.
- Certifications:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (preferred or required for some facilities).
- Experience:
- Prior experience as a surgical technologist, particularly in cardiovascular or thoracic surgeries, is strongly preferred.
