Job Summary and Qualifications

Certified Surgical First Assistant or Registered Nurse First Assistant competent in Endoscopic Vein Harvesting

The First Assistant functions within the scope of practice as established in TN and by facility guidelines for each surgical procedure and is responsible for assisting surgeons during intra-operative care. The First Assistant is responsible for obtaining needed equipment and/or instrumentation for their cases as well as ensuring equipment is functioning appropriately and reporting to their coordinator/maintenance if repair is needed. The First Assistant also assists with maintaining organized storage areas for equipment and instrumentation within surgical services.

What you will do in this role:

  • As First Assist, you will prepare the operating room and performs assigned support duties during surgical procedures.
  • You will ensure all instruments function properly prior to usage, displaying knowledge of instrument and content of set.
  • You will be asked to assist the RN in prioritizing implementation of physician’s orders according to the patient’s needs.
  • You may perform weekly and monthly specialty assignments.
  • You will assist in procuring instrumentation in accordance with surgeon’s preference card, knowledge of the procedure, in consideration of the anatomy involved. Anticipates the needs of patients and procures instrumentation according to those needs.
  • You will assist the team members in selecting and preparing routine supplies, instruments and equipment for the surgical procedure according to the procedural card.

What qualifications you will need:
  • BLS Certification
  • Previous CVOR Endoscopic Vein Harvesting Experience Required.
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Surgical Certification from accredited First Assistant accreditation body: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA), or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA), or Certified First Assistant, or Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA)
