Job Description

• General Duties:

  • Patient care for telemetry unit
  • Assessments, medication administration, basic EKG interpretation, dressing changes
• Primary Patient Population:

  • Medical cardiology, heart & lung surgery, vascular surgery
• Unit Details:

  • 40 beds in the telemetry unit
  • Care for cardio-thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, general cardiology
  • Providing nursing care for step-down critical care patients

Equipment Utilized

• Electronic charting
• Pyxis
• Epidurals
• PCA’s
• Bar code scanning for medications
• Temporary pacers with epicardial wires
• Chest tubes
• Wound vacs
• IV Alaris pumps

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum Experience: 2 years telemetry experience
• Licensures/Certifications Required:

  • BLS
  • ACLS

Shift and Schedule

• Call Requirements: No call required
• Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend
• Shift Variability: Varied shifts

Floating Requirements

• May float to critical care cluster units (MSICU, MSIMC, CICU) and occasionally to med-surg areas (MAP, OCU, PCU, PSCU)

Nurse to Patient Ratio

• Days: 3-4 patients per nurse
• PM Shifts: 4 patients per nurse
• Nights: 5 patients per nurse

Dress Code

• Scrubs

Orientation and Training

• Contract staff typically receive:

  • One 12-hour day orientation in the department
  • Learning lab
  • Mini-hospital orientation
  • EPIC training

Additional Information

• Candidates should be proficient in treating cardiology, cardiac/thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery patients.
• Basic EKG interpretation skills are required.
• Candidates must be aware of the BID form and Wisconsin Caregiver check requirements.
