- The WOCN serves as a clinical resource and consultant to the medical staff, nursing staff, other hospital and affiliate personnel and patients in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients with ostomies, wounds, fistulae, incontinence, and actual or potential skin breakdown.
- Utilizes the nursing process to care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients based on current standards of practice.
- Functions within the permissible scope of nursing practice as defined by the Georgia Board of Nursing and St. Joseph's/Candler Health System policies and procedures.
- Education - Bachelors of Nursing - Required
- Experience - 3-5 Acute Care Nursing Years - Required
- 1 WOCN Year - Preferred
- Core Job Functions include maintaining up to date knowledge of policies and procedures of Hospital as well as Standards of Practice for specialty area.
- Exercise independent judgment in the assessment of patient's needs, and identifies clinical priorities throughout the Hospital.
- Responds appropriately to resolving issues that impact patient care.
- Identifies opportunities for performance improvement, standardization of supplies and cost containment.
- Investigate complications and report finding to Clinical Manager and collaborates to develop action plans for improvement.
- Assists in ongoing data collection for balanced scorecards and quality reports.
- Gathers patient clinical assessment and relevant history and evaluates patient for appropriate treatment or therapy.
- Uses sound judgment and insight when setting priorities and demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills.
- Documents required elements accurately and in a timely manner.
- Under the order of the Physician, evaluates and develops a plan of care for patients with skin, wound, ostomy, negative pressure therapy and dressing needs.
- Instructs clinical staff on specific instructions for ongoing wound care of the patient.
- Enters negative pressure units utilization into on-line rental system.
- Orders and charges for patient care items as appropriate.
- Calculates consults and follow up visits and reports to Clinical Manager at end of month.
