Job Overview: Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS) RN Position

Location

  • City: Rapid City, South Dakota

General Information

  • Beds: 64 (spread across 2 floors)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Experience

  • Position: Intermediate/Stepdown Level RN
  • Experience: 1 year of nursing experience required
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted if they have more than 1 year of experience and EPIC experience
  • Travelers: Must live 100 miles away from any Monument Health facility
  • Permanent Staff: Must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler

Patient Types

  • Mixed Acuity Unit: Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg
  • Surgical Patients: Urology, prostatectomy, bowel obstruction, mass removal, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, general abdominal surgeries
  • Ortho Patients: Total joints (knees/hips/shoulders), Ortho Trauma
  • Neuro/Spine Patients: CVA/TIA, seizures, brain tumors, hematomas, aneurysms, craniotomies, spinal surgeries (laminectomies, fusions, discectomies)
  • General Medical Patients: Cellulitis, influenza, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, gastrointestinal disorders, DVTs, UTIs
  • Wound Care: Wound debridement, telemetry monitored patients

Patient Ratios

  • RN: 1:4 (even for MedSurg assignments)
  • CNA: 1:8

Required Certifications

  • RN: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS

Required Education

  • Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing

Skills Required

  • Comfortability with MedSurg assignments
  • Previous experience with IMC/stepdown acuity and Neuro patients
  • Ability to read/interpret cardiac strips, manage chest tubes, trach care, NGT tube placement, JP drains, and wound care
  • Drip titration of medications (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed)

Support on the Unit

  • Pod structure: 8 patients per pod; staffed with 2 RNs and 1 Nurse Aide
  • Charge nurses: Two charge nurses for ONS without patient load
  • Flex Nurse: Staffed daily 10a-10p
  • Resource Nurse and RT support available

Charting System

  • Preferred: Epic
  • Other systems: Alaris, Omnicell

Floating

  • May float to any Adult Inpatient Unit (Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, Oncology, Observation)

Orientation

  • 2 days of unit/department orientation
  • 2 orientation shifts on the unit with a preceptor

Scheduling

  • 6-week schedules
  • Weekend rotation: Up to 4 out of 6 weekends
  • No mandatory call time; potential for extra shifts
  • Holiday expectations: Must request time off prior to offer; no time off during blackout dates (August 1-18)

  • Scrub Color: Navy Blue
  • Parking: Free
  • Compliance Audits: Monthly for Pre/Post pain scoring (90% compliance required)

  • Various certifications and verifications including BLS, ACLS, education verification, and background checks.
