Position Details
- Specialty: Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS)

Unit Information
- Beds: 64 (spread across 2 floors)
- Patient Types:
- Surgical: Urology, prostatectomy, bowel obstruction, mass removal, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, general abdominal surgeries
- Ortho: Total joints (knees/hips/shoulders), Ortho Trauma (external fixation, soft tissue injury, minor fractures)
- Neuro/Spine: CVA/TIA with neurovascular intervention, seizures, brain tumors, hematomas, brain aneurysms, craniotomies, and spinal surgeries (laminectomies, fusions, discectomies)
- General Medical: Conditions such as cellulitis, influenza, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, and gastrointestinal disorders
- Patient Ratios:
- RN: 1:4 (even for MedSurg assignments)
- CNA: 1:8
Required Qualifications
- Experience:
- 1 year of nursing experience required for Intermediate/Stepdown Level RN
- First-time travelers accepted with over 1 year of experience and EPIC experience
- Certifications:
- BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Education:
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing; must be a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in South Dakota
Skills Required
- Comfort with MedSurg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown acuity and Neuro patients
- Ability to read/interpret cardiac strips and manage various medical devices (e.g., chest tubes, trach care, NGT tube placement)
- Knowledge of medication administration, TPN/tube feeding, blood product transfusions, and wound care
Support on the Unit
- Pod structure with 8 patients per pod, staffed with 2 RNs and 1 Nurse Aide
- Charge nurses available who do not take a patient load
- Resource Nurse support during dayshift
- RT and Hospitalist support available
Orientation and Scheduling
- Orientation: 2 days of unit/department orientation plus 2 shifts with a preceptor
- Scheduling: 6-week schedules with potential weekend rotations (up to 4 out of 6 weekends)
- Holiday Expectations: Must request time off prior to offer; no time off during blackout dates around the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
