Job Description

  • Experience Required: Minimum of 2 years of surgical unit experience. Travel experience is preferred but not required. Local candidates are accepted.
  • Required Skills:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
    • Blood Product Administration
    • Central and Peripheral Line Care/Management
    • Surgical drains management
    • Non-invasive airway management
    • Isolation Precautions
    • Wound Care/Wound Vac
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH (National Institutes of Health)

Preferred Skills

  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)

Job Details

  • Patient Ratios: 1:6 for surgical/medicine inpatient patients
  • Shift: 12-hour nights; 36 or 48 hours accepted (no overtime billed until after 48 hours)
  • RTO (Request Time Off): Maximum of 7 days
  • Float Requirement: May be required to float to other units as needed
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend

Special Requirements

  • Contract staff may be assigned to work during catastrophic events, mass casualties, or disasters.
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty.

Patient Diagnoses

  • Wide range of surgical and trauma-related conditions, including but not limited to:
    • Cellulitis
    • Appendicitis
    • Cholecystitis
    • Various cancers
    • Motor vehicle accidents
    • Gunshot wounds
    • Stabbings

Special Procedures/Unit Details

  • Involves a variety of inpatient surgical procedures, including:
    • Cholecystectomy
    • Appendectomy
    • Hernia Repair
    • Tumor Removal
    • Amputations

Equipment Used

  • Wound Vacs
  • Chest Tubes
  • NG tubes/Corpak
  • JP Drains

Unit Systems

  • Medication: Pyxis
  • Documentation: EPIC
  • Communication: SBAR

Orientation

  • 2 days of hospital orientation followed by 24 hours of floor training.

Dress Code

  • Scrubs: All Navy or Navy on bottom/White Top

Additional Information

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Scheduling Type: As needed
