Position Details

• Specialty: ICU (Intensive Care Unit)
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Experience Required: 3 years of recent ICU experience (no exceptions)

  • Must include experience in either neuro or cardiovascular (CV).
• Certifications Required:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • AZ license or compact license (TNCC preferred)

Unit Information

Surgical ICU

• Number of Beds: 32
• Nurse:Patient Ratios: 1:2, 1:1
• Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:

  • Trauma patients (falls, GSW, blunt trauma, MVAs)
  • Specialty neuro-surgery cases
  • CVA, status post-TPA, COVID, sepsis, ARDS
• Titration of Drips Required: Yes
• Common Titrated Drips:

  • Propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, rocuronium, levophed, vasopressin, cardene, labetalol, dopamine, dobutamine, heparin, insulin
• Charge Nurse: Yes, does not take patients
• RT in ICU: Yes, 24/7
• Equipment: Dreager, Hamilton, Puritan Bennett 840, V60s BiPap, Airvo

Medical ICU

• Number of Beds: 36 Medical Cardiac + 12 bed overflow
• Nurse:Patient Ratios: 1:2, 1:1
• Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:

  • Sepsis, COVID, DKA, Flu, ARDS, vascular surgeries
  • CVICU cases including CABG, valves, post-caths, ECMO
• Titration of Drips Required: Yes
• Charge Nurse: Yes, does not take patients
• RT in ICU: Yes, 24/7
• Equipment: Same as Surgical ICU

Scheduling

• Self-Scheduling: Yes, but may require balancing shifts for unit needs.
• Weekend Requirements: Typically every other weekend; may require up to 3 weekends a month if the unit is busy.
• Holiday Requirements: May have 1 holiday off during the assignment.
• Floating Requirements: Float to telemetry with a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio as needed.

Additional Information

• Dysrhythmia Exam: Required prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts).
• Sim Lab: Pass/fail on Day 1 of orientation.
• Orientation: 1-2 days specific to the unit/department.
• Dress Code: Navy scrubs.
• Additional Notes: First-time travelers are welcome, but must have 3 years of experience (2 years in ICU preferred). Expectation to float between all 3 ICUs.
