Position Overview

Job Responsibilities
- Provide care in a Surgical ICU with a focus on trauma and neuro surgery.
- Expected to float to the sister facility, Mercy Gilbert, if needed.
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam upon offer (2 attempts max).
- Participate in a pass/fail Sim Lab on Day 1 of orientation.
Patient Care Details
- Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:
- Level 1 trauma center cases (e.g., falls, gunshot wounds, blunt trauma, motor vehicle accidents)
- Specialty neuro-surgery cases
- COVID, sepsis, ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)
Nurse Responsibilities
- Nurse:Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:1
- Titration of Drips: Yes, RNs are required to titrate drips.
- Common Titratable Drips: Propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, levophed, vasopressin, etc.
Unit Details
- Charge Nurse: Yes, does not take patients.
- Support Staff: No nurse aids; only used for sitters and as Health Unit Secretary.
- In-House Support: Hospitalist or Intensivist available 24/7, RT (Respiratory Therapy) in ICU 24/7.
Scheduling
- Shifts: Self-scheduling available; manager may balance shifts as needed.
- Weekend Requirements: Typically every other weekend; may require up to 3 weekends a month if the unit is busy.
- Holiday Requirements: May have 1 holiday off during the assignment.
- Floating Requirements: Float to telemetry with a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio as needed.
Additional Information
- Scrub Color: Navy
- Unit/Department Specific Orientation: 1-2 days
- Expectation to float between all 3 ICUs (Surgical ICU, Medical ICU, and Overflow ICU).
- First-time travelers are welcome, but must have 3 years of experience (2 years in ICU preferred).
