Job Overview for ICU Position at Monument Health

Location

  • City: Rapid City, South Dakota

Position Details

  • Specialty: ICU
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Patient Ratios: RN: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 (acuity dependent)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Experience: 2 years of ICU experience (excluding travel experience). Candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience and significant RN experience outside of ICU may be considered with management approval.
  • Travelers: Must have completed at least one prior travel assignment and live 100 miles away from any Monument Health facility. Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as travelers.

Patient Types

  • Complex ICU patients including surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro, and trauma.
  • Common diagnoses: ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac catheterization, post-surgical, multiple system trauma.

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC (required prior to arrival)

Required Education

  • Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Skills Required

  • Epic experience
  • Comfortability working a 48-hour/week contract
  • Experience with IV medications (vasopressors, sedation, paralytics), hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, telemetry.
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.

Support on the Unit

  • CNA Support: 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit + mobility float aide
  • Charge Nurse: 2 CRNs oversee all ICUs
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
  • Physicians: 3 Intensivists on days, 2 on nights + APP on nights

Orientation

  • Hospital orientation includes (1) 12-hour shift and (1) 8-hour shift in the ICU.

Scheduling

  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Expectations: No requests for time off during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks in August).
  • Time Off Approval: Up to 7 days, must extend to accommodate a full 13-week contract.
