Job Summary

The Director of Nursing for the Emergency Department reports to the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services/CNO. This role is responsible for establishing and monitoring nursing standards of practice and operational quality improvement activities, including human resource and educational activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and nursing staff to establish the philosophy and goals of the Nursing Department.
  • Monitor staffing plans to ensure safe patient care and effective recruitment, hiring, and retention practices.
  • Supervise Assistant Directors of Nursing, Nurse Managers, and Administrative Nursing Coordinators.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and union requirements while providing clinical leadership.
  • Plan and implement data-driven performance improvement activities.
  • Participate in establishing nursing department standards, guidelines, and policies.
  • Assist in planning the nursing department’s budget and organizational structure.
  • Foster professional growth and development of nursing staff.
  • Conduct regular departmental meetings and maintain clear communication regarding the hospital's mission, vision, and goals.
  • Develop effective working relationships with ancillary and support services to improve patient care.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of nursing experience.
  • Strong critical thinking, math, and computer skills (Excel & Word).
  • Experience with quality measures, clinical guidelines, and process management initiatives.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (NYSDOH, JCAHO).
  • Competence in leadership and administrative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding, high-stress environment.
  • Flexibility in working hours and on-call responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
