Unit Information

• Unit: 4N Ortho - Neuro
• Number of Beds: 33 (All private rooms)
• Patient Ratios: 1 RN to 6 patients
• Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:

  • Elective surgeries: hips, knees, shoulders
  • Fractures from falls
  • Back & neck (Neuro-surgeries)
  • General MedSurg

Required Qualifications

• Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
• Experience:

  • Must have experience with ortho patients and PCA pumps
• Licensure:

  • WV or compact license required

Shift and Scheduling

• Shifts:

  • 12-hour shifts (0700-1930; 1900-0730) with a 30-minute lunch break
• Weekend Requirement:

  • Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement:

  • Dependent on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays
• Call/Standby Requirement:

  • Possible call-off for low census

Staffing and Support

• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor:

  • Charge Nurse available 24/7; day charge may take patients if necessary
• Patient Care Techs (PCTs):

  • Goal of 4 PCTs when full; typically 2-3 depending on staffing
• Floating Requirements:

  • Travelers are the first to float to any MedSurg units

Orientation and Dress Code

• Orientation:

  • 1 day of EPIC orientation, followed by 1 day on the floor with a preceptor
• Dress Code:

  • Royal Blue scrubs; scrub jackets must be royal blue if worn

Additional Information

• Equipment:

  • Cpap, Bipap, and High Flow managed by RT
• Telemonitoring:

  • Remote tele if needed; RN's do not read strips
