Description

A Registered Nurse (RN) in Urgent Care provides fast, effective, and compassionate nursing care to patients with non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses that require immediate attention. The RN in this setting works in a fast-paced environment, providing triage, assessment, diagnostic testing, treatment, and follow-up care for a wide range of conditions. This role requires the ability to quickly assess patients, prioritize care, and collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate care delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Assessment and Triage:

    • Conduct initial assessments, including vital signs, medical history, and presenting symptoms.
    • Perform triage based on the severity of the condition to determine the urgency of care, ensuring the most critical patients are prioritized.
    • Document all patient information accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) system, including assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and responses to care.
  • Provide Treatment and Care:

    • Administer medications as prescribed, including pain management, antibiotics, and other treatments.
    • Assist with minor medical procedures such as wound care, suturing, splinting, or minor surgical interventions under the guidance of a physician.
    • Perform diagnostic tests, such as blood draws, EKGs, and urinalysis, and interpret results.
    • Monitor patients for changes in condition and respond to emergencies or complications, including managing shock, respiratory distress, or allergic reactions.
  • Patient Education:

    • Provide education to patients and families on injury or illness management, medication use, home care, and preventive measures.
    • Explain discharge instructions clearly, ensuring that patients understand follow-up care, medication regimens, and when to seek further medical attention.
    • Teach patients about lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and stress management, that may aid in preventing future health issues.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Team:

    • Work closely with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care.
    • Assist in the development and execution of care plans for patients, ensuring appropriate treatments and follow-up.
    • Communicate with patients, families, and team members to provide updates on patient conditions and treatment progress.
  • Emergency and Crisis Management:

    • Recognize and respond to medical emergencies, such as chest pain, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, or trauma.
    • Provide life-saving interventions as needed, including CPR, wound management, and stabilization of patients in critical conditions.
    • Prepare for and respond to a variety of urgent care situations, including traumatic injuries, infections, and exacerbations of chronic conditions.
  • Infection Control and Safety:

    • Adhere to strict infection control protocols, including the proper handling of infectious materials, PPE usage, and sterilization procedures.
    • Ensure that the urgent care setting is safe and well-organized, reducing the risk of accidents or infections.
    • Monitor for and report any issues related to patient safety, including medication errors or potential safety hazards in the facility.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Ensure all patient interactions, treatments, and assessments are accurately documented in the EHR system.
    • Maintain accurate records of patient progress, test results, and changes in condition to ensure continuity of care.
    • Comply with healthcare regulations and privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) regarding patient information and confidentiality.
  • Administrative Duties:

    • Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling follow-up appointments, arranging referrals, and ensuring insurance documentation is complete.
    • Coordinate with pharmacies, specialists, or other providers to ensure timely and appropriate patient care.
    • Help ensure the smooth operation of the urgent care center, including maintaining inventory, restocking supplies, and ensuring that all medical equipment is functioning properly.
