Description

An X-Ray Technologist (also known as a Radiologic Technologist) is responsible for performing diagnostic imaging procedures using X-ray equipment to create images of a patient's internal structures. These images are used by physicians to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions. The role requires strong technical knowledge, an understanding of patient safety, and excellent communication skills to ensure high-quality imaging while maintaining patient comfort and care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Pre-Procedure Preparation:

    • Review patient medical history and physician orders to determine the appropriate X-ray procedure.
    • Prepare and check the X-ray equipment, ensuring that it is functioning properly and ready for use.
    • Explain the X-ray procedure to the patient to alleviate any concerns, ensuring they understand the process and why it’s needed.
    • Verify the patient’s identity, and ensure they have the appropriate paperwork, including informed consent forms if necessary.
    • Ensure that the patient is properly positioned and prepared for the procedure (e.g., removing metal objects and gowns).
  • Performing X-Ray Imaging:

    • Position patients correctly to obtain accurate images of the specific area of interest, using proper positioning techniques and guidelines.
    • Operate X-ray machines to take images of bones, organs, tissues, and other internal structures as requested by the physician.
    • Adjust the machine settings (e.g., exposure, radiation dose, and angle) based on the body part being imaged, patient size, and medical condition.
    • Ensure the images meet diagnostic standards for clarity and accuracy, making adjustments as needed.
    • Communicate with patients during the procedure, giving instructions (e.g., hold still, breathe deeply, or hold your breath) to ensure clear and accurate images.
  • Patient Safety and Comfort:

    • Ensure patient safety during the procedure by following radiation safety protocols, including limiting exposure to radiation and using protective gear (e.g., lead aprons) when necessary.
    • Monitor the patient during the procedure to ensure their comfort and provide reassurance, especially if the procedure causes discomfort or anxiety.
    • Ensure that patients are positioned safely to avoid injury or discomfort during the imaging process.
    • Address any patient concerns or side effects that may arise during or after the procedure.
  • Image Quality and Analysis:

    • Review X-ray images to ensure they are of sufficient quality for interpretation by a radiologist or physician.
    • Confirm that the images meet medical requirements, ensuring correct body part alignment and appropriate exposure.
    • If the images are unclear or incomplete, repeat the procedure as needed, adjusting settings or patient positioning.
    • Provide preliminary assessments or observations to the physician if required, within the scope of practice.
  • Post-Procedure Care:

    • Assist the patient after the procedure, ensuring they are stable and comfortable before leaving the imaging area.
    • Remove any protective lead aprons or coverings from the patient.
    • Provide post-procedure instructions, including care for any potential side effects or follow-up requirements.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • Perform routine maintenance and checks on the X-ray equipment to ensure it is in good working order and functioning properly.
    • Ensure the imaging room and equipment are clean and disinfected after each patient, adhering to infection control protocols.
    • Troubleshoot basic issues with the X-ray machine, and report any equipment malfunctions or concerns to the appropriate staff for repair or service.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Document all relevant patient information, procedures performed, and images captured in the electronic health record (EHR) or imaging system.
    • Ensure images are properly labeled, filed, and stored in the system for future reference and analysis by the physician.
    • Maintain accurate logs of X-ray procedures, equipment use, and any issues that arise during operations.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team:

    • Work closely with physicians, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the images are reviewed promptly and accurately.
    • Communicate effectively with the medical team about any issues related to image quality or the need for additional imaging.
    • Ensure that any follow-up imaging or additional procedures are scheduled as needed.
  • Radiation Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to established safety protocols to minimize exposure to radiation for both the patient and staff.
    • Ensure the appropriate use of protective equipment (e.g., lead shields, aprons, and thyroid collars) when necessary to protect the patient and others in the vicinity.
    • Comply with all radiation safety standards, including guidelines for exposure levels and safety measures specific to the facility.
  • Professional Development and Training:

    • Stay current with advances in radiologic technology, including improvements in X-ray imaging and new safety protocols.
    • Participate in continuing education programs, workshops, or certification courses to maintain licensure and keep up with industry standards.
    • Assist in the training of new technologists, students, or interns, offering guidance on the technical aspects of imaging and patient care.
