Unit Information
- Unit Type: Medical Oncology with progressive care beds/pediatric patients.
- Patient Care: High acuity of PCU with a small amount of med-surg.
- Patient Diagnoses:
- Solid Tumor
- Orthopedic Oncology
- Thoracic Oncology
Schedule
- Flexibility: No set schedule or weekends; must be flexible.
- Days Off: Maximum of 7 straight days off.
- Contract Requirement: 14-week contract required if taking 7 days off.
Required Experience and Skills
- Experience:
- 2 years of oncology experience preferred, but not required.
- High acuity PCU patient experience required.
- Certifications:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Skills:
- Interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of rapid response teams
- Blood product administration
- Central line care/management
- Starting IVs
- Management of cardiac drips (no titration)
- Tracheostomy management
Preferred Skills
- Management of dysrhythmias
- IV insulin protocols
- Chemotherapy administration
- Wound care management
Orientation and Training
- First Week: Monday to Friday dayshift orientation.
- Second Week: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.

- Patient Ratios:
- 1:4-5 for Med Surg Telemetry
- 1:3 for PCU
- Special Equipment:
- GE telemetry system
- Bladder Scanner
- Alaris pumps
- Continuous Bladder Irrigation
