Position Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

  • Unit Type: Advanced Care Unit (Stepdown)
  • Number of Beds: 30 (All private rooms)
  • Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:
    • Stroke, Trauma, & Vascular patients
    • Conditions include Fempops, Carotids, DKA, AKA, post-caths with TR Bands & femoral access
    • Typically 4-5 fresh carotids on the unit at a time

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Experience and Skills

  • Must have stepdown acuity experience with the types of patients on this unit
  • Ability to read cardiac strips is essential
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including:
    • Cardizem (titrated per doctor's orders)
    • Insulin
    • Heparin

Staffing and Support

  • Charge Nurse: Available 24/7; may take patient assignments based on unit needs
  • Nurse Aids: 3 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift with a ratio of 1:10
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Cpap, Bipap, High Flow; stable vents expected in the future
  • Monitoring: Monitor techs available; RNs must read, verify, and sign off on strips

Scheduling

  • Shifts:
    • Day: 0700-1930
    • Night: 1900-0730
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling and block scheduling allowed, subject to unit needs
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend; Night shifts on Fri/Sat/Sun; Day shifts on Sat/Sun
  • Holiday Requirement: Holiday rotation for permanent staff; travelers may be required to work weekends based on unit needs

Additional Information

  • Floating Requirement: Travelers are the first to float; may float to MedSurg/Tele or up to ICU for ACU status patients
  • Dress Code: Royal Blue scrubs; scrub jackets allowed but must be actual scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweat-jackets)
  • Orientation:
    • 1st day: HR and clinical educator introduction, shadowing
    • 2nd day: Continued shadowing
    • 3rd day: Independent work
