Position Details
- Specialty: IMU - Intermediate Care Unit
- Location: Wheeling, West Virginia

Unit Information
- Unit Type: Intermediate Care Unit (Cost Center 6010)
- Number of Beds: 30 (14 Private & 16 Semi-private)
- Patient Ratios:
- Goal: 1:4
- Typically: 1:5
- Occasionally: 1:6
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Staffing and Support
- Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts. A Clinical Assistant works on the floor with a patient assignment and in the office.
- Nurse Aides: Typically 2-3 CNAs with ratios of 1:10-12.
- IV Team: In-house 24/7, responsible for all IV starts.
- Respiratory Therapy: In-house 24/7.
- Pharmacy: In-house 24/7.
Shift Information
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM). Must be on the unit by 6:45 AM/PM. Self-scheduling is allowed, with 4 requested days off per month.
- Weekend Requirement:
- All staff must work weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun).
- Night shift staff must work 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule.
- Day shift staff must work 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule, with a minimum of 3 night shifts required.
Patient Care Responsibilities
- Common Diagnoses:
- Chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post catheterizations, and overflow patients requiring intermediate care.
- Drip Management: Nurses must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, and Heparin.
- Telemetry: Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips, although Tele Techs are available.
Orientation
- Floor Specific Orientation:
- 1st day: 4 hours with HR, followed by 8 hours on the unit with a preceptor.
- 2nd day: Additional time on the unit with a preceptor.
Additional Notes
- Flexibility: Travelers must be flexible regarding holiday shifts, although they are typically covered by permanent staff.
- Floating: All staff are required to float as needed into the rotation (Tele or MedSurg) with ratios up to 1:6, possibly 1:7 in MedSurg.
Scrub Color
- RN Scrubs: Navy blue top and bottom, navy scrub jackets (no hoodies).
