Medical Lab Tech II PRN Nights Position Summary
The Medical Technologist maintains technical and quality assurance standards and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory. Performs qualitative and quantitative analyses in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and/or Microbiology to obtain data used by pathologists and physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides quality customer service through ongoing interface and frequent communication with patients, physicians, hospital staff and management. Supports efforts to implement change and foster teambuilding. Understands and contributes to the vision/mission and goals of the Clinical Laboratory.
POSITION DUTIES:
Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and/or Microbiology to obtain data used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Provide complete, appropriate, and accurate documentation in accordance with regulatory and specific environment.
Analyze test results and relates them to the patient’s normal physical state, as well as to the presence of disease or other conditions that may be indicated.
Assist with the cleanliness of the Clinical Laboratory.
Ensure the quality and flow of work through Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology and/or Blood Bank by performing quality control checks, adhering to schedules, and keeping work area stocked and equipment in safe operating condition.
Assist in orientation, training, directing, and monitoring the work of students, graduate medical technologist, medical technicians, and staff new to the department.
Check that the barcode does not obscure patient name on specimen and identities on both labels match.
Run Quality Control as needed and enter data into the computer with appropriate QC Modifiers.
Accurately identify specimen results as they are obtained from instruments and enter, with comments, into the computer in a timely manner.
Adhere to departmental procedure for verification, documentation, and notification of identified critical values to appropriate site. Use acceptable abbreviations and terminology for data documentation.
Follow specific procedure for issuing corrected reports.
Notify Charge Person, Laboratory Specialist, Technical Supervisor, and/or Manager of unusual QC or patient results.
Equipment and supplies maintained, monitored, and malfunctions reported to Laboratory Specialist and/or Technical Supervisor and/or Manager. Document all equipment maintenance performed.
Complete work in accordance to CLIA/CAP/JCAHO standards.
Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the network.
Follow established policy and procedures as directed.
Level 2 – Proficient (in addition to above duties)
Assist in orientation, training, directing, and monitoring the work of students, graduate medical technologist, medical technicians, and staff new to the department.
Enter data into information systems used within the department. Retrieve statistical data and information.
Level 3 – Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties)
Assist with department procedures and administration.
Lead and support in revising policies and procedures.
Participate in quality improvement measures within the department.
THE MEDICAL LAB TECH II PRN NIGHTS CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.
EDUCATION
Required: Bachelors degree (or foreign equivalent) in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required: Certification by ASCP, NCA, AMT or HEW.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred: One (1) year hospital related experience
Knowledge
Required: Regulatory and accreditation requirements
Preferred: Continuous Quality Improvement Process related health care standards and practices.
Technology
Required: Basic computer skills, personal computer applications, and awareness of current use of technology in related field
Other
Required: Must be able to work variable shifts, weekends and/or holidays as required; must be able to respond to emergencies and call backs. Must be able to transport self.
