Description

Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in Electrophysiology (RN EP) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing electrophysiology procedures to diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders. The RN EP collaborates with electrophysiologists, cardiologists, and the healthcare team to ensure the highest quality of patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Procedure Care:
Conduct patient assessments and review medical histories prior to EP procedures.
Educate patients and families about the procedure, potential risks, and post-procedure care.
Obtain and confirm informed consent for procedures.
Administer prescribed pre-procedural medications.

Intra-Procedure Care:
Assist electrophysiologists during EP studies, ablations, and device implants such as pacemakers and ICDs.
Monitor and document patients’ vital signs and cardiac rhythms during procedures.
Ensure the sterility and proper functioning of EP lab equipment.
Operate and troubleshoot EP lab equipment including mapping systems and defibrillators.

Post-Procedure Care:
Monitor patients in the recovery area for stable vital signs and manage any immediate complications.
Provide post-procedure education to patients and their families regarding care instructions and follow-up.
Administer post-procedural medications and provide wound care.

Patient Education and Support:
Educate patients and families about heart rhythm disorders, treatment options, and lifestyle changes.
Provide emotional support and address any concerns from patients and families.

Documentation and Compliance:
Accurately document patient care activities, including pre- and post-procedure notes, medication administration, and patient responses.
Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards in all aspects of patient care.

Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate with the EP team and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
Effectively communicate with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and contribute to patient care planning.

Professional Development:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements in electrophysiology and cardiac care.
Participate in continuing education and training programs.
Maintain required certifications and licensure.

Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.

Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in critical care, cardiac care, or electrophysiology.
Previous EP lab experience preferred.

Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Certification in Electrophysiology (e.g., Certified Electrophysiology Specialist - CEPS) preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
Proficiency with EP lab equipment and technology.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Compassionate and patient-focused approach to care.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and move patients and equipment as necessary.
Manual dexterity to operate complex EP lab equipment.
