Job Overview: Pediatric Emergency Room (Peds ER) Nurse

Location

  • City: Bakersfield, California
  • Facility: Memorial Hospital

Contract Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • ENA ESI Certificate (Emergency Nurses Association Emergency Severity Index)
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) or CPEN (Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse) preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Significant experience in Pediatric Emergency Room (Peds ER) is required; general experience is not sufficient.
  • Travelers must have experience with a similar volume of patients seen per day.

Patient Care Details

  • Patient Volume: Approximately 325 visits per day, with 30,000 pediatric patients seen annually.
  • Common Diagnoses: Includes minor walk-ins to critically ill patients, such as respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, and substance abuse.
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Peds ER: 1:4
    • PICU: 1:2
    • Procedural sedation: 1:1

Unit Information

  • Number of Beds/Treatment Spaces:
    • 5 rooms in the Peds ER
    • 6 chairs for treatment
  • Triage: Managed by 1 triage RN; travelers can perform triage after completing one assignment.
  • In-house Security: Yes
  • Emergency Medical Records (EMR): Cerner (FirstNet) experience is required.

Staffing and Support

  • Charge Nurse: Responsible for all ER operations.
  • Support Staff: Includes ER techs, CNAs, and LVNs in the fast track area.

Shift and Scheduling

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (can be 1 per week or 2 every other week)
  • Holiday Requirement: Travelers are expected to work holidays unless it falls during contracted time off.
  • Floating Requirements: No floating outside of the ER.

Dress Code

  • Scrub Colors:
    • Navy blue for RNs
    • Cranberry for LVNs
  • Dress Code Policy: No hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweat jackets allowed.

Orientation

  • Unit Orientation: 2 shifts on the unit, plus meetings with the ER educator and Quality RN to ensure all education is complete.
