Position Details
- Specialty: Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS)
- Location: Rapid City, South Dakota
- Facility: Rapid City Hospital, Monument Health
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Beds: 64 (spread across 2 floors)
- Patient Types:
- Mixed acuity unit (Intermediate Care, Telemetry, MedSurg)
- Surgical: Urology, prostatectomy, bowel obstruction, mass removal, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, general abdominal surgeries
- Ortho: Total joints (knees/hips/shoulders), Ortho Trauma
- Neuro/Spine: CVA/TIA, seizures, brain tumors, hematomas, aneurysms, craniotomies, spinal surgeries (laminectomies, fusions, discectomies)
- General Medical: cellulitis, influenza, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, gastrointestinal disorders, DVTs, UTIs
- Wound care and telemetry monitored patients
Patient Ratios
- RN: 1:4 (even for MedSurg assignments)
- CNA: 1:8
Required Experience and Skills
- Experience:
- 1 year of nursing experience required (Intermediate/Stepdown Level RN)
- First-time travelers accepted with EPIC experience and greater than 1 year of experience
- Skills:
- Comfort with MedSurg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown acuity and Neuro patients
- Ability to read/interpret cardiac strips, manage chest tubes, trach care, NGT tube placement, wound care, medication administration, and blood product transfusions
- Drip titration of medications (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed)
Required Certifications
- RN: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Required Education
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing
Support on the Unit
- Pod structure: 8 patients per pod; staffed with 2 RNs and 1 Nurse Aide
- Charge nurse: Two charge nurses for ONS (no patient load)
- Flex Nurse available daily
- Resource Nurse support during dayshift
- RT and Hospitalist support available
Orientation and Scheduling
- Orientation: 2 days of unit/department orientation, plus 2 shifts with a preceptor
- Scheduling: 6-week schedules; weekend rotation may require working up to 4 out of 6 weekends
- Holiday Expectations: No time off during blackout dates (August 1-18) due to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

- Compliance Audits: Monthly for Pre/Post pain scoring (90% compliance required)
