General Information

• Beds: 30
• Minimum Years of Experience: 1 year
• First-time Travelers Accepted: Yes (must be separated for 1 year if previously a permanent staff)

Patient Types

• Post-op, Ortho:

  • Hip/Knee total joint replacement, discectomy, and fusions
• Med/Surg Overflow:

  • Sepsis, Diabetes, Renal Failure, CHF, COPD, ETOH/CIWA, IVDA, UTI, etc.

Patient Ratios

• RN:

  • Days: 1:4-5
  • Nights: 1:5-6
• CNA:

  • 1:10-15 (staffing dependent)
  • If only 1 tech: Days > 1:16 and Nights > 1:22
• Typical Staffing:

  • Days: 3 CNAs
  • Nights: 2 CNAs

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS (preferred)

Required Skills

• Prior post-op experience is most preferred
• Must pass an EKG competency exam prior to arrival
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation (manager approval required for offering)
• Experience with wound vacs, JP drains, PCA pumps, dressing changes, wound care, assist OT/PT
• Preferred experience with Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, Amiodarone drips

Support on the Unit

• Charge nurse may or may not have patient assignment
• Phlebotomy: peripheral blood draws only
• IV/VAT Team: Central/Midline placement
• RT: 24/7
• Hospitalist: 24/7
• OT, PT: daily, ST: on call
• Centralized Tele Monitoring with remote Tech

Charting System/Equipment

• EMR: Meditech Expanse
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Floating

• May float to other similar units within scope of practice
• Rotating with permanent staff

Orientation

• 2 days of hospital orientation
• 2 days on unit with preceptor (shift they are contracted to)

Scheduling

• Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
• Work Schedule: 4 days one week and 3 days the next week (mandatory)
• Time Off: Up to 7 days (must extend to accommodate 13-week contract)
• Call Required: None
• Holiday Expectations: Must work any major holiday
