Job Summary and Qualifications

The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high quality, patient-centered care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. In collaboration with medical providers and other members of the care team, the RN provides individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate care using established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage.” The RN serves as an advocate for patients/families/caregivers and models a commitment to the organization’s vision/mission/values to support an unparalleled patient experience and clinical outcomes that contribute to overall departmental performance.

  • Assesses patient condition during admission and during each shift as scheduled and/or as needed, identifying and reporting any changes in patient status.
  • Assesses patient environment for any safety risks and/or non-compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Assesses patient pain regularly to promote effective pain management, including reassessments after appropriate intervention.
  • Assesses patient condition for signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect. Reports any indications of abuse or neglect to medical provider(s), nurse leader, and/or appropriate agency.
  • Performs procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by the medical provider(s). Documents the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Performs the administration of prescribed medications. Monitors patient for therapeutic response. Notifies provider and intervenes as appropriate in the event of an unintended response to medication.
  • Performs exceptional care by responding promptly to patient requests. Strives to anticipate patient needs and resolve them proactively.
  • Teaches patients/families/caregivers about patient medical condition, patient status, treatment plan, medications and possible side effects, and follow-up measures. Translates complex medical terminology to ensure complete understanding.
  • Teaches patients/families/caregivers about any non-medicinal follow-up measures, such as healthy diet and exercise, disease prevention, and/or other lifestyle changes. Prepares patients and families/caregivers for future self-management.
  • Manages a care team, providing oversight and delegation to members as appropriate.
  • Manages evidence-based practices and continuous process improvement initiatives to meet and exceed quality measures and enhance the exceptional care provided to patients.
  • Manages the quality of care by collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate, evaluate, customize, and deliver a holistic patient treatment plan that promotes and supports recovery.
  • Manages the continuation of care by serving as the interface between healthcare providers and community support systems who coordinate ongoing care needs for specialized patient groups.
  • Uses specialized equipment and supplies safety and effectively, with adaptations according to patient age, size, and developmental needs.
  • Manages Swan-Ganz, arterial, and CVP lines and applies appropriate intervention as needed.
  • Effectively manages ventilators, troubleshooting issues as they arise. Collaborates with respiratory therapy practitioners and physicians in the care of intubated patients. Demonstrates knowledge of weaning parameters.
  • Administers vasoactive, antiarrhythmic, inotropic, sedative and paralytic agents per policy and unit standard.
  • Applies best practices to the care of sedated patients, minimizing the potential for injury.
  • Monitors cardiac rhythm. Interprets data, identifies issues, and applies appropriate interventions.
  • Provides care for the immediate post-operative patient.
  • Provides care for the potential and/or organ/tissue donor patient.
  • Considers principles of death and dying when caring for the caring for the terminally ill ICU patient. Provides emotional, spiritual, religious and cultural support to patients and their families.
  • Serves as an example of professional nursing practice and promotes pride in nursing for the organization, the community, and the health care industry.
  • Demonstrates caring and empathy in all interactions and advocates for patient- and family-centered approach in all decisions and actions.
  • Engages in evidence-based best practices that enhance the patient experience, including SAFETY rounding, bedside shift report, communication fundamentals/AIDET, Teach-Back, Narrating Care, etc.
  • Articulates a clear understanding of how to integrate patient experience behaviors into quality, safety, and nursing practice.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, including active listening. Ensures patients, physicians, and colleagues have a clear understanding of all communications, and escalates care concerns appropriately.
  • Participates as an engaged, active member of the health care team and positively promotes the rest of the team to patients/families/caregivers and other colleagues.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demonstrates behaviors consistent with established policies/procedures.
  • Shares new knowledge with peers and mentors those with less experience.
  • Participates in professional practice activities and advocates for shared governance functions.
  • Seeks opportunities to impact the growth of the organization by promoting excellence in patient experience and providing high quality care to the patients served.
  • Encourages physician engagement by nurturing a positive, professional work environment.
  • Functions as a good steward of financial resources by effectively managing supplies, equipment, length of stay, and throughput.
  • Assumes personal accountability for work time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Associate Degree in Nursing or RN Diploma Required
  •  Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Preferred
  • < 1 year applicable experience Required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state(s) of practice and/or has an active compact license, in accordance with law and regulation.
