JOB SUMMARY:
The Summer Nurse Externship is a 10-week program designed for nursing students entering their final year. The program begins with a two-week orientation including both classroom and clinical components, in which the nurse extern performs basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. The Nurse Extern is assigned to a Registered Nurse throughout the Externship to perform basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. Nurse Externs partner with an RN to learn and demonstrate physical assessment skills, and learn and demonstrate routine basic care skills (bathing, safety, and hygiene activities). This is for a nursing student entering their final year of an accredited nursing program.

Operating Room
A Nurse Extern in the Operating Room (OR) is a nursing student who works under the supervision of experienced Registered Nurses (RNs) and surgical teams in the operating room environment. This externship allows the student to gain practical, hands-on experience in perioperative care, assisting with the care of surgical patients before, during, and after surgery in the operating room suite. The extern’s role provides an opportunity to observe and participate in key aspects of the surgical process, enhancing clinical skills, knowledge, and understanding of sterile techniques, patient safety, and surgical procedures. This position provides a valuable learning experience for nursing students seeking to specialize in perioperative nursing. It offers the opportunity to develop and experience the perioperative nurse’s skills in patient care, surgical techniques, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment, with direct mentorship from experienced nurses and surgeons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Nursing student of an accredited Nursing Program and one clinical rotation, or a Graduate Nurse without Boards required.
