Experience Minimum Required • Three years’ experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician in a health-system pharmacy with an understanding of the operations and any regulatory requirements in their area of practice Experience Preferred/Desired • 2 years’ experience in a lead role Education Minimum Required • Bachelor’s degree Training Minimum Required • Certified pharmacy technician Training Preferred/Desired • Advanced Pharmacy Technician certificate in specialty area, if available. Special Skills Minimum Required • Strong interpersonal, organizational, technical, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. • Able to understand and clearly communicate with all areas of health care personnel. • Able to collaborate with diverse, multidisciplinary teams. • Able to handle frequent interruption and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and set priorities. Licensure and/or Certification Required • NH Pharmacy Technician Registration within 14 days of hire. • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or NHA, formerly known as ICPT) Licensure and/or Certifications Preferred/Desired • Advanced Pharmacy Technician certificate in specialty area, if available. Under the direction of the Lead Pharmacist, the Lead Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the staff in their area of practice, guiding the daily operational workflow, assisting in scheduling of technicians, and providing staff development. The Lead Pharmacy Technician coordinates the activities of the pharmacy technicians and assumes responsibility for establishing operational efficient workflows and developing strategies for continuous quality improvement. The Lead Pharmacy Technician performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to, auditing and inspections, activities related to equipment and supplies, and the effective and efficient management of personnel. The Lead Pharmacy Technician works closely with pharmacy management to establish and promote technician engagement and professional development; and, will lead by example, is a role model to others, and is expected to take full responsibility for their work using technical skills and critical thinking. 1. T he Lead Pharmacy Technician will assist with the operations related to their area of practice. a. Schedules pharmacy technicians and find replacements for sick calls and vacations. Assists with coordinating services and prioritizing assignments and workflow. b. Promotes situational decision-making and problem solving by providing support of those functions that may be of a difficult manner, including pharmacy specific procedures and technical guidance and troubleshooting of pharmacy related equipment. c. Ensures staff compliance with both institutional and regulatory requirements. d. Assists with pharmacy project management. e. Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental policies and procedures. f. Monitors the usage of supplies and equipment in order to promote cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Makes recommendations to meet budget goals. g. Assists with the evaluation of new equipment and supplies and provides input into the decisions about their acquisitions. 2. T he Lead Pharmacy Technician will be accountable for providing staff development activities in their area of practice. a. Coordinates Pharmacy Technician trainee experiences: Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of staff; Arranges and provides appropriate initial training and annual re-training for technical staff. b. Provides input in performance appraisals of Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Interns. c. Devises and administers staff competencies and maintains the staff competency library in assigned area. d. Serves as a positive role model for team members by working with them to promote teamwork and cooperation. Provides outstanding customer service and conducts service recovery as required. e. Serves as a role model in order to promote technician advancement and professional development by participating in related committees or professional societies. 3. T he Lead Pharmacy Technician will devise and participate in related Continuous Quality Improvement activities. a. Actively participates in quality improvement activities of the department. Leads the development and refinement of pharmacy technician workflows. b. Develops and monitors pharmacy technician metrics and adjusts workload as necessary. c. Completes and documents all assigned end of month responsibilities as identified by Pharmacy Leadership. d. Identifies and implements quality improvement measures. Reports errors and gaps in safety measures. Conducts and implements corrective and preventative action plans as required. e. Assures that preventative/periodic maintenance is performed as required. f. Keeps Pharmacy Leadership informed of all equipment and problems associated with their area of responsibility, user errors and/or trends. 4. M aintains competence required for current position description. a. Attends and participates in pharmacy staff/technician meetings. b. Ensures area of responsibility follows Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements. c. Utilizes organizational skills to assure smooth functioning of department operations in area of responsibility. d. Participates in relevant professional organizations/associations. 5. P erforms the duties of a Certified Pharmacy Technician as defined in the job description (specific to area of practice) as necessary. a. Prepares IV and non-IV medications for dispensing under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision and consistency relating to selection, packaging and labeling function.
