GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT Working in the Research Core Lab at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, the incumbent will work within a setting the provides core services of histopathology, microscopy/imaging, and flow cytometry. Primary responsibilities will be in the Histology laboratory. Utilize basic understanding of histology and apply skills to work within the lab that includes tissue processing, preparation of solutions and operation of equipment. Must be flexible in working with different researchers and investigators on various projects. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Perform routine daily histology core lab work: o Tissue grossing, processing, embedding, and cutting (microtome and cryostat) o Perform routine H&E stain s and special stain s o Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence stains o Slide sorting and boxing (based on project login and labels on the slides) o Maintain histology equipment s (tissue processor, microtome, cryostat, automated strai ner, coverslip instruments): cleaning, reagent s preparation, changing o Clean lab glassware, prepare reagents, clean/organize lab space 2. Performs basic work to assist in research projects: o Prepares lab solutions o Performs base-level procedures as assigned o Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed o Maintains laboratory notebook o Be able to perform multiple tasks independently o Maintains and orders supplies 3. Help/train core users to use microscopy/imaging equipment, including bright field and fluorescent microscopes, digital imaging system, confocal microscopy system, live cell time lapse imaging system, and whole slide scanner 4. Assist core users with Flow Cytometry system 5. Operate, maintain and trouble shoot imaging instruments 6. Maintain records in accordance with strict laboratory practice guidelines 7. Perform other core lab work as needed WORKING CONDITIONS Working environment is in a research setting; may work as needed in office space. Properly handle potentially biohazardous body fluid samples from patients and animals as well as chemicals and other materials. Utilize various pieces of equipment in a safe manner. Work environment may be hectic or stressful. There may also be prolonged periods of sitting or standing, and some duties may require lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs. EDUCATION: - B.S. in biological science or related area preferred EXPERIENCE: - Some related experience preferred SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED - Develop and demonstrate competence in research and histology techniques applicable to roles - Basic biology lab skills - Able to properly operate and troubleshoot equipment - Follows all procedures and policies - Works safely, using all protective equipment properly as needed - Basic computer skills: MS word, Excel, Microsoft Access - Quick learner and willingness to learn new skills and technologies - Ability to work both independently and with a diverse group of people in a service oriented environment - Ability to work flexible hours - Attention to detail, ability to perform work requiring manual dexterity - Good problem solving skills, good customer service skills - Strong interpersonal and communication skills FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY - Prudent use of hospital resources. Cost-effective ordering of supplies.
