Brigham and Women's Harbor Medical Associates, a member of Mass General Brigham Medical Group, is a multispecialty, primary care practice with more than 65 physicians. We have several offices across the South Shore and are affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, and South Shore Hospital. We believe that patient care comes first. Our physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and support staff recognize the importance of prompt, expert, and compassionate care for patients whose needs span from general health maintenance to treatment for complex medical problems. The Opportunity The Medical Technologist (MT), in the role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the technical oversight of the laboratory including the day-to-day oversight of the laboratory operation and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under general supervision, the MT carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department’s standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. Assists with training of staff. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA: Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results and must: 1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results; 2. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; 3. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed; 4. Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance; 5. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director; 6. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; and 7. If qualified under §(b)(5), perform high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under §. Exception: For individuals qualified under §(b)(5), who were performing high complexity testing on or before January 19, 1993, the requirements of paragraph (b)(7) of this section are not effective, provided that all high complexity testing performed by the individual in the absence of a general supervisor is reviewed within 24 hours by a general supervisor qualified under §. Additional responsibilities under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor: 0. Performs routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures on blood and clinical specimens, according to laboratory policies. 1. Prepares samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies. 2. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of all test results according to laboratory policies. 3. Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents. 4. Keeps accurate records of quality control, maintenance and workload data according to laboratory policies. 5. Responsible to document all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Hematology Laboratory. 6. Refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties and documents all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Hematology Laboratory. 7. Performs clerical and support services as needed, such as answering the telephone, calling STATS and alert values to the appropriate department or clinician, disposing of contaminated specimens, control of inventory, etc. 8. Participates in proficiency testing program. 9. Communicates with hospital personnel providing assistance related to laboratory policies and procedures, laboratory utilization, and test result interpretation. 10. Is responsible for ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies. 11. Keeps current in developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Clinical Hematology. Participates in internal and external continuing education. 0. Promotes the mission and vision of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and laboratories, and a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the Hematology laboratory staff. 1. Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control and safetyplans. 2. Performs other duties as necessary. Hours: Monday - Friday 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm, rotating weekends - day shifts. Qualifications: 1. Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university, OR 2. Meets other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M – 1495. 3. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred. Skills Required: 0. The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action. 1. The manual/visual dexterity and skills necessary to operate adjust and make repairs to various types of automated and non-automated laboratory equipment. 2. Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques. 3. Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to chemical analytical procedures and quality control. 4. Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately. Must be able to remain calm and productive under constant pressure and emergency situations, which produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue. 5. Must have neat and orderly work habits. 6. Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols. 7. Must be able to perform as a team member, provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff. 8. Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations. 9. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees and patients. 10. Excellent communication skills. 11. Knowledge of Federal, State, Joint Commission and other regulatory regulations.
