STAFF SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST-SPECIALIZING IN INPATIENT SPEECH/LANGUAGE/COGNITION / ADULT CARE / DAYS / 40 HOURS /BWH REHAB/ BOSTON, MA The Rehabilitation Services Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides speech language pathology services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and orthopedic technician services to patients on a consult basis to our ambulatory clinics, inpatient floors, ICUs, and the Emergency Department. Brigham and Women’s is a nationally ranked academic medical center located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts. Staff Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) will be joining a team with diverse clinical backgrounds and expertise. SLPs should have an unrestricted license to practice speech language pathology in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Their primary responsibility is to provide patient care in accordance with State licensing regulations, departmental standards and policies, and accepted professional standards of care. SLPs will provide evaluation and treatment services primarily for inpatients referred with speech, language, cognitive disorders. Staff SLPs will receive mentorship from experienced clinicians. In addition to regular collaboration with other rehabilitation disciplines and the multidisciplinary team, the SLPs will have many opportunities for clinical growth through internal continuing education programming, financial support for external continuing education courses and conferences, and access to formal mentorship program. SLPs can also participate in a variety of Rehabilitation Department Committees to enhance their professional growth in addition to their clinical care. These committees include: The Community Resource Committee, Practice Standards Committee, Staff Development Committee, Rehab Recognition Committee, Research Committee, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Opportunities to advance on our established merit-based clinical ladder (Clinical Fellow, Staff Therapistwith Certificate of Clinical Competence, Senior SLP, and Clinical Specialist) allow clinicians to be recognized for their clinical, scholarly, and service contributions and accomplishments. The staff SLP position is an excellent opportunity for a Massachusetts licensed SLP seeking clinical and professional growth at a dynamic academic medical center. The SLP with an unrestricted Massachusetts license is responsible for providing evaluations and treatment services for adult patients referred for speech, language, and/or cognitive disorders. Services are provided on an inpatient basis with the opportunity to provide care in the ambulatory clinics as needed. In addition to providing evaluations and interventions that are consistent with accepted Standards of Practice of the profession to appropriately referred patients, the SLP is responsible for providing administrative, supervisory, and education/marketing duties as delegated by the Clinical Supervisor. Primary Assigned Clinical Area: BWH – Main Campus Provides skilled speech, language, and/or cognitive services as assigned to patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in accordance with State Licensure Statute and Regulations. Professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, applicable federal, state and regulatory agencies’ standards and regulations, hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Specifically: 1. Examines and evaluates patient’s communication using formal and informal clinical evaluations. Identifies speech, language, and cognitive disorders and associated dysfunctions. In collaboration with the patient and/or caregiver/family, develops a treatment plan with treatment goals directed towards maximizing function. 2. Demonstrates competency with both routine and complex patient case type(s) with all populations and disorders. 3. Consults with other members of the health care team to ensure coordination and effectiveness of therapies provided. 4. Assists with implementation of triaging and prioritizing referrals and discharges to and from the service as assigned. 5. Demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to manage patient caseloads and care plans. 6. Demonstrates effective written/electronic documentation and oral communication skills. Maintains documentation per departmental policy and format that is accurate, complete, and timely. 7. Demonstrates ongoing professional growth and development with evidence of effective self-assessment skills, initiatives, acceptance of the responsibility for professional behavior, and ongoing acquisition of knowledge and skill. 8. Participates in departmental meetings, which help to formulate policies, procedures, and program development. 9. Supervises graduate student interns and support personnel as appropriate. Peer-mentors new employees. 10. Performs administrative duties which may included responsibility for equipment and supply maintenance, quality assurance, documentation propriety, continuing education,space management, reimbursement tracking, productivity tracking, caseload triage, student program, competency assurance, accreditation. 11. Performs all other duties as assigned. 12. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care across the adult lifespan serviced by the Speech and Swallow Service. QUALIFICATIONS: - Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university program. - Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. - Possess or be eligible for licensure in Speech-Language Pathology from the state of Massachusetts - Demonstrate expertise in the diagnosis and remediation of neurogenic communication disorders preferred. - Work requires at least three months’ orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with department and hospital policies and procedures, and the specific quality standards of care and procedures unique to the assigned patient area. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: - Possess interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a variety of individuals. - Must possess effective communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with patients, colleagues and other health care personnel. - Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands. - Must possess the physical abilities needed to assist with moving patients (pulling, pushing and lifting) from stretcher to stretcher/chair for swallow studies and to push stretchers from the radiology suite to inpatient reception (100 feet). Also, must have the physical abilities needed to assist patients with stand pivot transfers. Must be able to push portable workstations if necessary. - Must possess the stamina to do standing work over 75% of the day and the fine motor skills necessary to work a keyboard.
