Summary:
The purpose of this position is to perform various outpatient care duties and prepare patients for examinations/procedures, including preparing patients for clinic visits by completing intake documentation, vital signs, height/weights and rooming; preparing and assisting in examinations/procedures; collecting lab samples and performing point of care testing. Pursuant to Physician delegation, this position may collect give identified injections and medications. Additionally, this position may perform front and back office duties, such as registration, scheduling and financial processes in various outpatient clinics, managing the insurance authorization and referral process for a specified clinic, and collect funds. This position may also conduct screening of patient insurance to determine if financial counseling is necessary.

Responsibilities:
* ALL MEDICAL ACTS PERFORMED BY A MEDICAL ASSISTANT ARE PURSUANT TO DELEGATION BY AND UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PHYSICIAN. THE DELEGATING PHYSICIAN REMAINS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MEDICAL ACTS OF THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT
* PERFORMING THOSE ACTS. Subject to this delegation requirement, the following job specific responsibilities apply:
* Escorts or transports patient to exam rooms, treatment rooms or other areas as directed.
* Prepare patient for examination and treatment by Physician or other Provider; gather patient data regarding condition; take vital signs, height and weight and document this information in the medical record.
* Obtain past medical history and history of current illness/condition.
* Perform point of care testing as required for their position.
* Obtain specimens from patients through venipuncture and capillary collection (blood), nasal, throat, skin and cheek swabs, and urine specimens from patients in accordance with Physician or other Provider order or written protocol; receive and labels specimens from patients and verify patient's information and transfer that information to specimen container. Facilitate transport of specimens.
* Prepare clinic area by stocking rooms with appropriate medical supplies; dispose of medical waste and clean and maintain laboratory and examination room equipment.
* Prepares examination rooms by arranging sterile instruments on tray and stocks rooms with appropriate medical supplies. Disposes of medical waste. Cleans and maintains examination room equipment. Cleans and maintains examination rooms between patients.
* Perform EKG's as required for their Department, in accordance with Physician or other Provider order or written protocol.
* Provide patients and families pre-printed instructions and educational material, as directed by Physician or other Provider.
* Upon completion of additional education, perform certain advanced tasks at Physician or other Provider request and pursuant to physician delegation or standing orders. Limited to: eye drops (Ophthalmology), topical anesthetic (such as EMLA and Synera Patch), and immunization injections.
* (Nephrology Clinic) Perform Dexascan in accordance with Physician or other Provider order or written protocol.
* Complete Home Health, DME, Title 19, and other Governmental forms that do not require assessment or clinical judgment.
* May perform data gathering for prescription refills, pursuant to Physician delegation. Limited to: reviewing medications with patient, removal of refill request from Voicemail, verifying current prescription in EMR, and forwarding refill message to physician using EMR. May NOT accept orders for new medications or changes to medication prescription, i.e. dose, route, frequency.
* Accept and enter verbal orders from Physician or other Provider for labs, procedures, and radiology test. May NOT accept verbal orders for new medications or changes to medication prescription, i.e. dose, route, frequency. May enter orders into EMR.
* Provide normal lab, imaging and pathology results via phone or letter to patient and families at the request and direction of Physician or other Provider. The fact that a result is Normal must be documented in the Provider's result notes regarding the lab, radiology or pathology results. Medical Assistant may NOT answer patient or family questions about results or provide independent education or guidance regarding results.
* May respond to inbound interactions utilizing EMR to schedule and confirm patient appointments, registrations, and inquiries following established protocols to ensure patient safety and data integrity.
* May utilize EMR to proactively contact patients, caregivers, Physicians and the community to schedule and remind patient appointments, complete registrations and respond to inquiries following established protocols and workflows.
* May perform front desk support including answering telephones, scheduling appointments, check-in and check-out procedures, collection and cash reconciliation; conducts reports following established protocols to ensure patient safety and optimize the revenue cycle.

This is a full-time position working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

You may be required to float occasionally to other Children's Health locations including Dallas, Plano and THD Clinics.(sStart time hours can be discussed during interviews)

Credentials:

* Basic Life Support

WORK EXPERIENCE

* Less than 1 year Minimum 6 months experience in a patient care setting or completion of MA program Req

EDUCATION
* High school diploma or equivalent Req

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* MA certification acquired through an accredited program Pref
* Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements 60 Days, Req
