Summary:
The goal of the pharmacist-intern position is to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely, to efficiently and effectively provide pharmacist-delivered patient care to a diverse patient population and practice pharmacy under the laws and regulations of the State of Texas. The internship is conducted under the supervision of a healthcare professional preceptor or pharmacist preceptor in all practice areas. The longitudinal internship experiences are conducted primarily in the Central Pharmacy and Emergency Department.

Responsibilities:
* Complies with laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy practice, applies professional judgment, exhibits reliability and credibility in dealing with others, deals professionally and ethically with colleagues and patients, demonstrates sensitivity and empathy and maintains confidentiality.
* Demonstrates competence in determining appropriateness of prescription drug orders and medication orders, evaluates and selects products and assures accuracy of the product/prescription dispensing process.
* Demonstrates competence in using acceptable professional compounding procedures. Meets training requirements for pharmacists engaged in sterile and non-sterile compounding.
* Demonstrates competence in collaborating with physicians, other healthcare professionals, patients and patient agents to formulate a therapeutic plan. Demonstrates competence in establishing and interpreting databases, identifying drug related problems and recommending appropriate pharmacotherapy specific to patient needs, monitoring and evaluating outcomes and devising follow-up plans
* Demonstrates competence in retrieving, evaluating and using the best available clinical and scientific publications for answering drug related requests
* Demonstrates competence in obtaining and providing accurate and concise information in a professional manner, using appropriate oral, written, and nonverbal language.
* Demonstrates competence in interviewing and counseling patients or patient agents on drug usage, dosage, packaging, routes of administration, intended use and storage. Discusses cautions, adverse effects, and patient conditions. Explains policies on fees and services and relates to patients in a professional manner confirming patient understanding. Assists in drug selection and assesses need for treatment or referral.
* Develops general understanding of planning, staff and fiscal management, leadership skills and policy development. Understands drug security, storage and control procedures and regulatory requirements for these procedures as well as maintaining quality assurance and improvement. Observes and documents discrepancies, keeps accurate records and documentation of actions. Attends meetings requiring pharmacy representation as required.
* Develops skills to expand or refine knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences, medical sciences or pharmaceutical services.
* Develops basic knowledge and skills needed to become an effective healthcare educator and responsible participant in civic and professional organizations.
* Perform other duties and special projects with progression of internship as required.

ESSENTIAL CREDENTIALS
* Pharmacist Intern
* Basic Life Support

WORK EXPERIENCE
* At least 1 year of previous pharmacy or hospital experience Preferred

EDUCATION
* Currently enrolled in an ACPE-approved college of pharmacy program Required
* 20-hour ACPE-accredited IV training course Preferred
* Pharmacy Immunization Certificate Preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Current Texas Pharmacist-Intern license Required
* Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements - 90 Days Required
