Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician III can function independently of the pharmacist (at least 85% of the time) and works in specialized areas, including hazardous sterile compounding, critical care, hematology/oncology, and emergency room.
Responsibilities:
* Respond to and resolve inquiries and questions (telephone and direct) within the limits of the law with at least 85% independence from the supervising pharmacist or team leader.
* Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area
* Assist in maintaining overall cleanliness and organization of work area and maintaining a continuous level of readiness for inspection by external groups.
* Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining the integrity of sterile compounding areas
* Maintain and monitor proper documentation of compounding, cleaning (including deactivations and decontamination of hazardous drugs), testing, and certification of equipment and compounding areas.
* Efficient operation of specialty machinery, equipment, and technology (e.g. baxa pumps, dispense prep and check)
* Proficient with understanding sterility testing systems, USP compounding standards, and state board of pharmacy rules related to sterile and hazardous compounding.
* Assists with ordering, managing, and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
* Participates in teaching activities, including but not limited to, precepting Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Students, Pharmacists, and other healthcare practitioners.
* Spends 90% of their time performing in at least one of the specialized roles listed below. Maintains competencies to perform in at least two other operation areas outside the primary work area.
* Sterile Compounding and Chemo Pharmacy Technician
* - Compounding, packaging, and labeling of sterile hazardous and chemotherapy preparations in accordance with USP regulations.
* - Competent and efficient in using closed-system drug-transfer devices (CSTD).
* - Trained on hazardous drug exposure and spill control, including treatment of individuals accidentally exposed to hazardous.
* Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Pharmacy Technician
* - Compounding, packaging, and labeling of sterile preparations in accordance with USP regulations; Able to perform pharmaceutical calculations in the execution of tasks.
* - Ability to compound medication in code situations.
* - Accurately prepares complex sterile admixtures using proper aseptic technique. Delivers medications in a timely and efficient manner.
* Transitions of Care Pharmacy Technician
* - Promotes patient safety through accurate medication history intake.
* - Provide complete information regarding each medication identified (i.e., drug, dose, route, frequency, indication for PRN, and last dose taken date/time).
* - Obtains information through patient and patient family interviews. Leverage EMR data to identify previous medication refills.
* - Triages medication history intake by identifying patient acuity and by the direction of emergency medicine clinical pharmacists
This is a Full Time, 7on/7off Deep Nights Position; Rotating weekends, every other weekend
WORK EXPERIENCE
* At least 5 years experience as a hospital pharmacy technician Required
EDUCATION
* High school diploma or equivalent Required
* 20-hour ACPE accredited IV training course Required
* Chemotherapy certification course (required for sterile and chemo tech role) Required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician Req
* National Certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Pref
* Basic Life Support (BLS) for ICU pharmacy technicians only Req
* Completion of PTCB-recognized medication history certificate exam (for transitions of care pharmacy technician) Pref
