Summary:
The Vascular Access Team (VAT) nurse functions within the scope of RN licensure to provide direct patient care as the expert resource for establishing and maintaining optimum venous access. The VAT nurse evaluates patients for, and places peripheral intravenous catheters, (PIV) ultrasound-guided PIVs, midlines, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in our pediatric populations. This position serves as a subject matter expert for PIVIE assessment, extravasation treatment and Intraosseous access. This nurse provides vascular access care based on the age-related needs of the patient and family with consideration of their development/psychosocial needs, environmental safety, education needs, communication style, and level of understanding.
Shift:
12-hour shifts, 3 shifts/ 7-day week, 7a-7p, but potential for rotation to mid shift or nights
Highlights of responsibility:
· Responds to vascular needs across the hospital.
· VA nurses function as part of a team to provide service 24/7
· Promotes vessel health and preservation by education hospital staff and families.
· Trains hospital staff in right site access.
· Specialized training to perform vascular procedure.
· Work towards VA-BC by 2 years of service on the team.
