Job Title: RN NICU Transport

Job Summary: A transport nurse is a Registered Nurse whom upon completion of the transport orientation provides comprehensive nursing care to critically ill or injured neonate and children. The transport nurse, through the use of expanded nursing skills, is responsible for accurate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with established protocols while on the transport and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), or Emergency Department. The RN is responsible for the stabilization and care of patients during transport under the direction of designated Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center (GCRMC) physician or accepting provider. The transport RN is also responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the GCRMC.

Responsibilities:

1. Consistently provides safe and effective nursing care which addresses the age-specific variations related to growth and development.

· Performs patient assessment interventions with advanced stabilization skills at the referring hospital.

· Administers IV medication safely and accurately.

· Demonstrates proficiency in technical and procedural clinical skills in accordance with policy and procedures, standards of practice, State Practice Act/Rules and Regulations which includes medication administration, two patient identifiers, restraints, pain, sedation, and time-outs.

· Prioritizes and organizes care prior to and during transport based on patient acuity, time limitations, and consultation with the GCRMC physicians.

· Coordinates the plan of care with other health care team members and initiates action to prevent current or potential risk to a patient in an emergency situation.

2. Consistently provides safe transportation of patient transport while delivering quality care.

· Supports patient safety initiatives which include: National Patient Safety Goals such as medication administration, two patient identifiers, restraints, pain, sedation, and time-outs.

· Complies with safety instructions, observes safe work practices and provides input to management on safety issues.

· Maintains infection control on transport by following the policies and procedures of transport and GCRMC.

· Maintains an environment that is conducive to safe care on transport.

· Assists in loading all required equipment into ambulance and ensures equipment is properly secured.

· Wears seatbelt and shoulder harnesses in ground ambulances.

· Secures patient with transport and hospital approved devices.

· Other duties as assigned.

3. Complexity of work

· Demonstrates critical thinking through individualization and prioritization of care (assessment, problem identification and desired outcome, planning, implementation, evaluation).

· Recognizes, reports, responds to, records, and re-evaluates changes in pertinent patient information or condition in appropriate timeframe.

· Identifies and reports hazards to management with possible solutions.

· Effectively communicates, verbally and in writing to referring hospital and GCRMC personnel.

· Provides age and developmentally appropriate care in a culturally sensitive manner regarding patient care interventions, safety measures, age appropriate equipment and supplies, and communication with and education of referring hospital personnel, patient and family.

· Promotes exceptional customer service and supports the GCRMC philosophy of “Family-Centered Care.”

· Provides mutual respect and support for GCRMC team members.

Personal Protective Equipment

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

Required Licensure:

Registered Nurse in the State of Florida - Current FL RN license required or appropriate compact licensure. If compact license held in another state, active FL RN compact license required within 90 days of hire. Advanced Nurse Practitioner license acceptable

Required Certifications:

· American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification required within 30 days.

· Within 60 days - Current AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) renewed prior to expiration every two years.

· Within 45 days - Current AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) renewed prior to expiration every two years.

· Within 45 days - Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) renewed prior to expiration every two years.

· Within 6 months - Current S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification or must be obtained within six months of hire.

Education & Experience:

    • Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma from an accredited institution required.
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

    · Experience: 4000 verifiable hours of RN experience is required. 2000 hours verifiable of RN experience in Level II or level III NICU required.

    · Completion of pediatric stabilization program

    · Successful completion of Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT) certification within one year of hire.
