Job Summary

Under direct supervision, the Pathologist Assistant performs gross descriptions of simple or limited specimens, assists during autopsies, and prepares frozen section slides. Routine histology tasks may also be required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Follow authorized technical procedures for patient testing.
  • Meet established turn-around times for testing and reporting results.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory with appropriate patient identifiers and register them in the electronic medical record.
  • Conduct calibration and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Label tissue cassettes using block control sheets.
  • Assist in the preparation of frozen tissue sections (labeling, cutting, and staining slides).
  • Perform gross descriptions of simple and limited pathology specimens as authorized.
  • Prepare patients for evisceration during autopsy.
  • Work on call for autopsies.
  • Photograph specimens for documentation and conference preparation.
  • Comply with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures, including the appropriate use of PPE.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development and complete annual competency assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 1 to 3 years of laboratory technical experience.
  • Ability to perform required laboratory testing.
  • Team player with the ability to follow instructions.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain legible, accurate, and organized records.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information and sound judgment.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Understanding of various operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Professional communication and cooperation with co-workers and caregivers.
  • High initiative and commitment to completing assignments.
  • Ability to assist in the pre-analytical phase for specimen procurement and handling.
  • Troubleshooting and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to assess and verify the validity of patient test results.
  • Core knowledge of normal laboratory processes.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
