Job Summary

• Perform technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring adherence to accepted standards of practice.
• Maintain, assemble, handle, and sterilize specialty instrumentation.
• Follow aseptic techniques and proactively identify contamination or breaks in aseptic technique.
• Conduct surgical counts and report discrepancies.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field, ensuring the team maintains a sterile environment.
• Label drugs and solutions, monitor quantities used, and assist in the identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
• Participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes for optimal accessibility during procedures.
• Assist the surgeon with an understanding of patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
• Review physician preference lists and check supplies and instruments required for each surgical procedure.
• Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
• Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
• Serve as a role model and mentor for new hires and peers, participating in teaching and evaluating performance.
• Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.
• Assist with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.
• Assist registered nurses during the intraoperative phase of nursing practice.
• Participate in data collection for research projects under the direction of an RN.
• Operate complex equipment in the operating room and perform daily cleaning and verification of emergency carts.

Required Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of various vascular standard OR cases and hybrid vascular cases, including EVAR and TCAR.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and policy manuals.
• Effective communication skills to respond to questions from patients, physicians, family members, and staff.
• Basic math skills for measurements and calculations.
• Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions and define problems.

Preferred Skills & Experience

• One (1) year of experience as a Surgical Technician with CVOR experience in areas such as:

  • Cardiac procedures (Coronary Artery Bypass, Aortic and Mitral Valve surgeries)
  • Minimally invasive heart valve surgery
  • ECMO, Balloon Pump insertion, circulatory arrest, aortic dissection
  • Lead placement and removal, TAVR, Impella placement
  • Familiarity with various types of wires and catheters used for interventional cases.
