Unit Description

• Primary Patient Population:

  • CV surgery and vascular surgery (including open heart surgery, thoracic lung surgery, esophagogastrectomy, AAA repair, fem-pop bypass, carotid endarterectomies)
  • Overflow medical cardiology patients (heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, heart block)

Staffing and Patient Ratios

• Day Shift:

  • 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 1.33 HUC
• Night Shift:

  • 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 0.33 HUC
• Patient Ratios:

  • 1:5 patients per RN
  • 1:13 for PCTs

Equipment and Technology

• Type of Equipment: Baxter IV pumps, CADD epidural pumps, various lifts
• EMR System: Cerner

Hiring Profile

Required Skills

• Stepdown experience
• Telemetry experience

Preferred Skills

• Prior experience with CV surgery and vascular surgery populations (open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA repair, fem-pop bypass) within the last year
• CVICU experience

Typical Procedures

• Epidural management
• Chest tube management
• Tube feedings
• IV gluccomander
• Cardiac gtt management (e.g., phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)

Additional Information

• Floating Areas: Any stepdown or medical-surgical unit, ER inpatient holding area
• Dress Code: All navy, white tops/navy bottoms, or all white
• Weekend Requirements: Minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) per 6-week schedule period
• On Call: No call required
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
