Unit Information

• Unit: 4Heart, Cardiovascular Progressive Care (CVPC)
• Location: Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC
• Floor: E4 - CVPC
• Building: E Heart Tower
• Number of Beds: 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds
• Staffing: Approximately 100 total staff members

  • Day Shift: 1 charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 1.33 HUC
  • Night Shift: 1 charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 0.33 HUC
• Patient Ratios: 1:5 patients per RN, 1:13 for PCTs

Patient Population

• Primary focus on cardiovascular and vascular surgery patients, including:

  • Open heart surgery (CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR)
  • Thoracic lung surgery (lobectomy, thoracotomy)
  • Esophagogastrectomy
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair
  • Carotid endarterectomies
• Overflow medical cardiology patients with conditions such as heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block.

Required Skills and Experience

• Must Have:

  • Stepdown experience
  • Telemetry experience
• Preferred:

  • Experience with CV surgery and vascular surgery populations within the last year
  • CVICU experience

Typical Procedures

• Epidural management
• Chest tube management
• Tube feedings
• IV gluccomander
• Cardiac medication management (e.g., phenylephrine, dobutamine, insulin)

Certifications Required

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)

Additional Information

• Floating Areas: Any stepdown or medical-surgical unit, ER inpatient holding area
• Dress Code: Navy scrubs or white tops with navy bottoms
• Weekend Requirements: Minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule; flexible to work holidays
• On Call: No call required
