Unit Information

• Unit Name: Medical ICU
• Number of Beds: 26
• Patient Ratios: 2:1
• Unit Staffing: RNs and Unit Secretary/COVID Runner; total care provided by RNs.
• Type of Equipment:

  • Ventilators
  • Alaris IV pumps
  • Balloon pumps
  • Ventriculostomy drains
  • Glucometers
• Documentation System: Meditech using Evidence Based Clinical Documentation (EBCD)
• Scheduling Requirements:

  • 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM
  • Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirements apply
• Floating Policy: Nursing staff may float to other Medical-Surgical Units as needed, with priority to Intensive Care Units.

Patient Care Expectations

• Patient Experience Requirements:

  • Hourly rounding
  • Bedside hand-off reporting
  • Completion of “My Care Board” during hand-off
  • Use of AIDET with a focus on compassionate connected care

  • Must be willing to care for COVID-19 patients
  • ICU experience
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, self-motivated
  • Good communication and people skills
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment
• Advanced Skills Needed:

  • Ventilator management
  • Critical care drip knowledge
  • Thorough and accurate assessment skills
  • Proficient knowledge of cardiac, neuro, and respiratory systems
  • Donning and doffing of PPE
• Procedures Performed on Unit:

  • Intubations
  • Cardioversions
  • Ventriculostomy drain placement and management
  • IABP management
  • Continual renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Proning of patients
• Certifications Required:

  • ACLS and BLS
  • TNCC is a plus

Dress Code

• Required uniform: Ceil blue scrubs
• Optional: White or ceil blue scrub jacket
• For COVID patients: Green surgery scrubs provided upon arrival
