Position Details

Unit Information

• Unit: 3N - Cardiac Tele (Cost Center 14)
• Number of Beds: 43 (Semi-private, with 9-10 private)
• Patient Ratios: Average 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)

Required Certifications

• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)

Patient Population

• Common diagnoses include:

  • Post heart catheterizations
  • TR Bands
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Post pacemaker patients (no external pacers)
  • Medical management or waiting for CABG consult
  • Arrhythmias

Experience and Skills

• Must be able to read cardiac strips.
• Comfortable with cardiac patients.
• RN's are required to titrate Heparin drips; Cardizem and Amiodarone are not titrated.
• RN's must be able to perform EKGs.

Staffing and Support

• Charge Nurse: Available 24/7; may take patient assignments based on unit needs.
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): Goal ratio of 1:8, can flex up to 1:12-18 depending on circumstances.
• Monitor Techs: Present on the unit; RN's are required to read strips.

Shift and Scheduling

• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0700-1930; 1900-0730)
• Self-Scheduling: Allowed; block scheduling can be accommodated if unit needs are met.
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for travelers; permanent staff works every third weekend.
• Holiday Requirement: Travelers may be required to work holidays based on unit needs.

Additional Information

• Floating Requirements: Travelers may be floated within the hospital, including ICU (rare) and Stepdown, but only to patients within their skillset.
• Dress Code: Royal Blue scrubs; scrub jackets are optional but must be actual scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweat-jackets).
• Orientation: 1 day of computer training followed by 1 day of shadowing with a preceptor.
• Team Environment: Emphasis on teamwork; fast-paced unit with approximately 8-12 discharges and admissions per day. RN's are expected to manage their own admissions and discharges but are encouraged to ask for help if needed.
