Located in north-central Massachusetts along the Millers River and settled in 1735, Athol has a long and storied past. The city was originally known as Pequoiag, an Algonquian name, before its incorporation in 1762 when it took its current name, the Scottish home of the dukes of Atholl. It's an area filled with natural beauty and opportunities for all types of outdoor activities like swimming, fishing and hiking, with trails leading to spectacular vistas. In town, you’ll find multiple parks and trails, including Alan E. Rich Environmental Park, a hidden treasure of conservation land with beautiful native plants, picnic tables and benches for tranquil contemplation. Set at the beginning of the Millers River Bluetrail, it's a popular place to launch a canoe or kayak to paddle the 6-mile water course. In charming Downtown Athol, you can visit several shops, restaurants and a bakery.
