Description
A Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Registered Nurse (Pediatric BMT RN) specializes in the care of pediatric patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. This role focuses on managing the complex and specialized needs of children undergoing BMT procedures, including pre-transplant assessment, post-transplant care, and ongoing monitoring for complications. The Pediatric BMT RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care, support, and education to patients and their families throughout the transplant process.
Key Responsibilities:- Assess, plan, and provide nursing care to pediatric patients undergoing bone marrow transplants, ensuring their physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs are met.
- Administer chemotherapy, radiation, immunosuppressive therapies, and other treatments related to bone marrow transplant preparation and post-transplant care.
- Monitor and manage patients’ response to therapies, monitoring vital signs, lab values, and side effects, including febrile neutropenia, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and infections.
- Collaborate with physicians, hematologists, oncologists, and other specialists to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Provide patient and family education regarding treatment regimens, medication adherence, infection prevention, and post-transplant care.
- Assist in the coordination of pre-transplant evaluations, including bone marrow biopsies, lab work, and other diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor and manage the administration of bone marrow transplant-related medications, including IV therapies, blood product transfusions, and pain management.
- Support patients and families through the emotional, psychological, and physical challenges of the transplant process, ensuring compassionate care and support.
- Document patient assessments, care plans, interventions, and outcomes, ensuring compliance with regulatory and hospital policies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, ensuring coordination of care and adjustments to treatment plans as needed.
- Educate and train nursing staff on BMT protocols, disease management, and best practices for pediatric patients.
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
- Licensure:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Certification:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Certified Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurse (CPHON) preferred.
