Description

Responsibilities

Conduct surveillance of healthcare practices to identify problem areas and determine necessary interventions.
Gather and analyze data from lab reports, patient charts, and communications with facilities and units.
Provide education and training to program areas requiring changes, and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions.
Develop, organize, and deliver infection control education to staff, patients, and the community through formal presentations and one-on-one counseling.
Offer consultation and expertise to various stakeholders on infection control practices, leveraging in-depth knowledge and best practice research.
Investigate infection control outbreaks, conduct research, review statistical data, and make recommendations based on findings.
Coordinate infection prevention and control activities, communicate with managers regarding outbreaks, and provide advice and guidance.
Participate in immunization clinics by administering vaccinations and collecting data.
Provide patients and their families with educational literature and counseling on infection control topics.
Attend and contribute to department and committee meetings, offering input into policy and procedures where applicable.

Knowledge and Skills

Thorough understanding of infection prevention and control regulations and guidelines.
Expertise in sterilization, decontamination, microbiology, and infectious processes.
Familiarity with environmental health services best practices and epidemiological principles.
Proficiency in policies, procedures, standards of practice, and guidelines at various levels (regional, provincial, national).
Current knowledge of trends and developments within nursing and specific programs.
Commitment to research and evidence-based practice.
Experience in health promotion and program development.

Qualifications

Undergraduate Degree in Nursing from an approved college or university.
Infection Control Certification from the Canadian Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA).
Registration with the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARRNL).
BLS certification.
Completion of an infection control course from CHICA.
