UMC is a great place to work as a travel nurse. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, and I can’t say one bad thing about 3 East. Patient ratios 1:3-1:5 on night shift with 7-8 nurses at all times and charge with no assignment. I felt safe at all times with help available if ever needed. It truly is a team.

The culture is very cliquey with open disdain for men on the East Tower OR this is where most travelers will go. They drove off or fired every male in the OR diving one traveler to walk off the contract. Three RNs cut their contracts short. It’s a hell hole.

Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Technologist organizes, directs, and performs activities related to instrumentation, sterilization, and supplies that are utilized for patient care in the operating room

This posting reflects multiple positions in the CVOR.

* $15,000 Sign On Bonus with 2 year agreement after orientation and $3,000 relocation bonus if moving 75 or more miles to Lubbock*

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:

* Prepare the operating room for incoming surgeries
* Assisting surgeon in the operating room
* Inventory surgical instrumentation and supplies prior to an operation
* Recount surgical instruments and supplies at the end of an operation
* Sterilize equipment and stock up on necessary supplies
* All other assigned duties related to attending the operating room

Education and Experience

* High School Diploma or GED
* Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program

Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations

* Basic Life Skills Certification (BLS); must obtain within the first 30 days of hire into the role
* Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery- Certified (TS-C) of Certified First Assistant (CFA)

Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of clinical standards and practices of surgical technology
* Ability to use hand quickly with precision
* Effective communicator; Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently
* Good listening skills to comprehend and quickly respond to the needs of the surgeon and surgical team

Physical Capabilities

Work is demanding and requires ability to push, pull, and lift, up to 50 pounds.

Requires lots of walking and extended periods of time standing and/or sitting. Effective communication with physicians and OR staff is critical. Near visual acuity required to work with documentation, instrument gauges, dials, and equipment indicators

Environmental/Working Conditions

This position is subject to varying indoor temperature changes. Work done intraoperative is performed in a high- risk area for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other biowaste hazards.

A nurse in our Pedi unit will be able to grow and learn in a team-oriented atmosphere where medical and surgical care is provided using a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach. Combining the talents of more than 30 specialists and subspecialists, children at UMC are treated for a wide range of needs that can include trauma, general surgery, cardiology, neurology and neurological surgery, oncology/ hematology, endocrinology, and burn care. The nurses on Pediatrics possess a desire to serve children and families in our service-oriented atmosphere.

Job Summary:

Registered professional nurse who assesses, implements or delegates, plans, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in accordance with established philosophy, providing and directing patient care for a group of patients. Relates effectively with other shifts/departments for optimal continuity of care.

Departmental Description:

GTSCU is a 29 bed Medical/Surgical unit. We have two primary focuses on GTSCU; one on the Geriatric Trauma patient age 60 years or older who has sustained a trauma and the other on the palliative care patient; our goal is to provide relief of suffering that may occur at many points during a disease process. Patients assigned to GTSCU are received primarily from the Emergency Center and ICU's. GTSCU was developed as a result of Best Practice and Research that indicates that a shorter length of stay decreases morbidity and mortality in the elderly hospitalized patient that sustained a trauma. GTSCU also serves a quiet and peaceful environment for patients and families as we care for their loved one who may be at the end of life. The nursing staff on GTSCU are trained to care for patients at the end of life as well as those who will be discharged home or to other facilities.
