1 nurse recommends working here
I work CCU/CVICU. 16 beds total. 8 are designated for post op open heart. Ratios are 1:1 or 1:2 depending on acuity. If the patient is on any type of machine (ie. balloon pump, CRRT, arctic sun, impella) they are always 1:1, same goes with fresh post op CABG. Some occasions patients are 2:1 (two nurses, one patient). I only have night shift experience. No charge nurse, only house resource that are extremely helpful on nights ( don’t know how helpful on days). Usually no tech but on some occasions we do but everyone is super helpful and house resource will come help when they are available. No in house doctor on nights so you have to call doctors. ER doc will come up for any codes. Have to draw your own labs, but okay with drawing out of Art lines, PICCS, midlines. House can come draw labs if you are unable to stick. You get to make your own schedule but you have to balance a schedule to make sure there are enough nurses each night. The scheduler may move a day or two but you know well in advance. Not much opportunity for overtime as we are normally well staffed. The culture on night shift is amazing. Everyone is very helpful and willing to answer questions and take newbies under their wings to show them the ropes. We don’t have any travelers. Our CCU manager is awesome and always comes by in the morning to see if we need anything. Only down side is compensation is low compared to other hospitals in the area, however it’s a great place to maintain your sanity and work high acuity.
