Overview 
We are seeking a full-time educator to design and implement education and nursing professional development programs in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  
The PICU at Levine Children’s Hospital is a 10- bed intensive care unit.  The staffing ratio is ideally 1:1, 1:2 depending on the acuity of the patients. The types of patients you might see in the PICU would be ventilated, on ECMO, trauma, seizures, unstable or new CIPAP/BIPAP, new trachs, and any other condition where the patient is seriously compromised or needs intensive medical care.  Candidates must have at least 6 months of RN experience, this position is not for new graduates.

Job Summary
Serves as a role model, consultant, change agent and facilitator in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of orientation and educational programs with the Division of Nursing. 3K Medical Observation: 3K is a 22-bed observation unit.  Our patients are here for a variety of behavioral health reasons requiring hospitalization.  On 3K we do cohort most of the children at Levine Children's Hospital with a mental/behavioral health diagnosis. However, because we are a medical observation unit, we can also care for patients with a 1-2 day stay in the hospital.  Majority of these diagnosis include IV hydration, rule out sepsis, ortho observation, and surgical observation. 
Our staff is very passionate about caring for children and teens with behavioral health needs.  We have a diverse group of nurses with backgrounds in Adult and Pediatric Nursing, Behavioral Health, and Med/Surg nursing, to name a few. We are all CPI trained and certified.  We have championed the Disruptive Patient Star Program at LCH to address the safety issues related to this population.  In addition to the nursing staff on 3K, we have psychiatric technicians to help care for our behavioral health population.

The CVICU (pediatric cardiovascular intensive care unit) at Levine Children's Hospital is currently 10-bed unit and will be expanding to 20 beds by mid-2024!  This high acuity unit is currently ranked #8 in the country for Best Children's Hospital for Cardiology and Heart Surgery by U.S. News and World Report in 2023. The staffing ratio is usually 1:1 or 1:2 and we care for a wide range of ages, from neonate to 18 years of age.  Patient population includes the following: pre-op and post-surgical repair of congenital heart defects; heart transplant; ventricular assist devices; acquired heart disease; ECMO; CRRT; etc.  Patients are monitored very closely until stable enough to be transferred to the 8th floor (Progressive Care).

Primary Purpose
The ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the operating ECMO equipment and assisting the manager with the daily operations to include but not limited to coordination of patient care/outcomes, allocation of human and fiscal resources, communications, patient throughput, program development and oversight, patient, physician and teammate rounding, selection, development, and retention of team members, clinical supervision and performance appraisal, performance improvement activities, service recovery and compliance with regulatory agency requirements.  The ECMO clinical supervisor maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the population served and equipment operated.
Major Responsibilities

 <li>Supervisors ECMO daily operations and staff.</li>
 <li>Monitors pump functioning throughout patient therapy and maintains pump integrity; monitors circuit volume and administers products, medications and/or volumes as ordered; monitors anticoagulation, electrolyte acid-base balance and blood gas composition volumes and adjusts ECMO circuit to maintain physician orders. </li>
 <li>Recommends appropriate changes to current patient management based on latest information or changing patient status. </li>
 <li>Generates and compiles appropriate documentation and charges related to ECMO. </li>
 <li>Operates point of care laboratory equipment; interprets and acts on results based upon physician orders. </li>
 <li>Sets up and primes ECMO circuits; initiates and maintains extracorporeal life support according to protocols. Assists with coordination of cannulation, decannulation, and in-house transport of patients on ECMO. </li>
 <li>Manages planned and emergent disruption of ECMO. Replaces circuit components under normal and emergent conditions. </li>
 <li>Facilitates a multidisciplinary approach in the care of ECMO patients. </li>
 <li>Assures to maintain competency with ECLS/ECMO procedures at least 24 hours quarterly and 96 hours annually of pump time. If these cannot be met with patient care, specialists will participate in drills to meet requirements. </li>
 <li>Provides CRRT in neonatal and pediatric populations. Will assist with provision of CRRT in adult cardiac patients on ECMO as requested.  </li>
 <li>Utilizes appropriate resources to plan and provide services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible. </li>
 <li>Coordinates and assists with interfacility transport for patients on ECMO. </li>
 <li>Serves as validator during annual competencies. </li>
 <li>Participates in committees, shared governance or other facility decision making activities. </li>
 <li>Participates in and or assists in ECMO Air transport – Fixed and Rotor wings. </li>
 <li>Participates on committees and shared governance activities, serving as a resource for ECMO Specialist colleagues.</li>
 <li>Coaches and counsels’ teammates and after consultation of the manager for administrative supervisor administers discipline up to and including written warnings.</li>
