As part of the continuum of mental health services established by the Florida Mental Health Act (Baker Act), the Hospital serves persons 18 years and older who have exhausted the less restrictive available alternatives in the communities. Persons may be either voluntary admissions or admitted involuntarily by means of judicial order. Individuals are also transferred to the Civil Treatment units from the Forensic programs in order to conform with the legal imperative of providing treatment in the least restrictive setting without endangering the individual or others.

Every person admitted to the Forensic Program is committed by the courts and may come from any county in the State. All forensic residents have been charged with crimes and may be Incompetent to Proceed, or Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.

Florida State Hospital has a rich history, the site having been first used as a Federal Arsenal, built by the United States Army as an arms depot during the Second Seminole Indian War. Reportedly contracted by the United States Government, William H. Face of Pennsylvania was hired to finish carpentry on the headquarters arsenal. Construction was begun in 1832 with an appropriation of $20,000 and completed in 1839, following the war, at a total cost of $226,932.50. Position Summary

Duties of a Registered Nurse Specialist F/C include:

The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program (DDDP) is dedicated to empowering persons with developmental disabilities charged with a felony crime to:

1. Acquire the skills and supports that will prepare them for success in their future environments.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is located at a 24-hour facility. Staff members must be agreeable to working a shift schedule; regular, evening, or night. Days Off: Varies.

* Participates in assessment and formulation of initial service plan and subsequent plans of care for residents assigned.
* Prepare or supervise nurse in preparing resident for EKG, EKG, consults, x-rays, and related procedures.
* Assesses, implements, documents manual holds, seclusion/restraint processes utilizing required documentation/forms.
* Assist the medical physician as needed.
* Provide emergency nursing care and examination of injuries with documentation and follow-up care as needed.
* Responsible for ordering and maintaining adequate resident/nursing and supplies with inventory and discarding any outdated supplies.
* Responsive and compliant with current residents' rights and advocacy issues; adheres to and complies with unit, hospital, and departmental policies and guidelines.
* Accepts written, oral and phone orders from physicians, psychiatrists, ARNP's, PA's or dentists, transcribes orders and initiates or carries out orders.
* Participates in the formulation of individualized residents' treatment plans.
* Admits and transfers residents to and from home unit or other hospital facilities with proper forms completed and ensures that appropriate documentation accompanies residents.
* Designates (in conjunction with physician) the mode of travel for residents with medical problems who are traveling off the ward for services or appointments.
* Provides individualized and group counseling to resident (behavioral, medication, treatment) and psychotherapy as needed.
* Participates in resident evaluations, diagnoses, and development of each resident's treatment and discharge plan with the treatment team. Preparation of nursing care assessments/service implementation plans for designated residents.
* Serves as a resource person to other nurses for training and continuing education activities; works with supervisor in scheduling/ approving attendance to outside training activities for nursing personnel as needed.
* Monitors, supervises, evaluates unlicensed assistive personnel in performing assigned nursing functions according to DCF OP 155-5 with copies to their supervisor for inclusion on staff's evaluation. Provides training to them when needed to perform assigned function.
* Performs other related duties as required to meet the needs of the department or resident's quality of care.
