QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized, accredited university preferred; * Graduate of accredited school of nursing and licensed by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners to practice nursing; * Two (2) or more years of nursing experience preferred. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Probationary/Term Contract: 187 days SALARY: Pay Grade T60 (Teacher and Nurse Classification) as approved by the Board of Trustees http://www.cfisd.net/en/job-seekers/why-cfisd/teacher-hiring-schedule/ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The school nurse shall provide and coordinate the Health Services program in the school assigned, such as: RESPONSIBILITIES TO STUDENTS: * To provide emergency care for the ill or injured, using first aid procedures, and obtaining necessary assistance in cases of serious trauma and/or illness. * To coordinate with Special Education in providing services to all students with special needs. To provide one-on-one care as needed to an individual student as assigned by the supervising RN. In this occurrence the school RN is released from duties as the school nurse. * Provide for daily care of students with medical problems in the school setting, by carrying out or assisting with special procedures, such as catheterization, tube feeding, etc. * To provide health appraisals including height, weight, vision, hearing, spinal, acanthosis nigricans screenings and other health assessments as deemed necessary. * To provide referrals and follow-up for identified health problems as necessary to attain optimum health for each student. * To maintain accurate and complete health records on each student including immunization records, health history, screening results, referral, and follow-up information. * To adhere to the Texas immunization law securing records on each student and to update as necessary on electronic medical records. * To control communicable diseases (excluding and re-admission); notifying the health department of all reportable diseases. * To dispense medication according to state law and district policy. * To promote health education in the clinic, in the classroom and with the teacher by providing support and resources to meet the curriculum needs. * To make home visits as part of the assessment and follow-through process. * To provide health counseling for students with health problems, cooperating with principals, teachers, counselors, family physicians and other agencies. RESPONSIBILITIES TO SCHOOL DISTRICT, PRINCIPAL, DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES AND STAFF MEMBERS: * To actively support the philosophy of the school district and the total school program. * To communicate effectively with the principal in interpreting and implementing policies, laws, and procedures of the health services program. * To provide faculty and other appropriate personnel, with information and assistance with the classroom management of students with medical conditions. * To compile monthly health services reports and annual reports of all screening results and immunizations. * To cooperate effectively with all student service departments, faculty, and parents to meet the needs of students. * To continue to pursue educational studies to maintain a professional level of performance. * To cooperate with other staff members in child abuse and drug abuse cases, assisting with the documentation and referral process. * To maintain certification in BLS Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and AED as required by the American Heart Association. * Brautigam Center Nurse Only: To coordinate the American Heart Association CPR Program for the District. * Attend all health services staff meetings and other meetings required of staff members in school assigned. * To perform other duties and functions as assigned. RESPONSIBILITIES TO COMMUNITY: * To promote health by participation in community activities such as providing blood pressure screening, organizing blood drives, teaching First Aid and CPR courses, and assisting the American Red Cross during disasters, by serving in shelters at designated schools in the district. * To be a liaison between the school and community, physicians, hospitals, and other health agencies. WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
