The RN First Assistant assumes responsibility for the management and delivery of patient care utilizing the nursing process. Assists, under the direction of the primary operating surgeon, in the perioperative care of the patient undergoing a surgical procedure, to include specific functions within policies and guidelines established by the facility in conjunction with national standards. This position requires population specific competency emergency call and floating to other Operating Room specialty areas. Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) management of the delivery and documentation of patient care includes, but is not limited to the following: * Assessment and re-assessments, development of the plan of care, implementation and evaluation of appropriate patient care interventions. * Assists with operative procedures to include wound exposure, hemostatis, harvesting vein for bypasses, suturing, wound dressing and drains, and subcutaneous injections of local anesthesia. * Participates actively in performance improvement strategies to include physicians and staff, monitors and audits processes, identifies problems, implements solutions and develops strategies to improve patient satisfaction. * Identifies abnormal test results or conditions, plan, implement, evaluate, and re-assess pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. * Participates in other perioperative staff roles, i.e., circulator or scrub nurse role as assigned. * Provides individualized surgical nursing care management before, during, and after surgery. * Recognizes surgical anatomy and physiology and operative technique related to first assisting. * Assists with intra-operative handing of tissue, providing exposure, using surgical instruments, suturing, and controlling blood loss, competence in recognizing surgical hazards and initiating appropriate. Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) reports to the Clinical Director of Surgical Services. This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements. High exposure to hazardous risks and contaminants, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, suction splashing, chemicals, cleaning solvents - Stat IV, sterilization chemicals, hexacholorophate, betadine and sharps and wet floors. Temperatures may vary in procedure environment, may stand on hard floors or platforms, exposed to a variety of interruptions, odor, and must wear universal protective clothing. May be required to work overtime, late shifts, weekends and be on call. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed.
