Department Overview The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) will support the Labor & Delivery department. This department consists of a 12-bed labor unit including: 4 triage bays, 3 operating suites and 2 bed PACU. The ANM, in association with the Nurse Manager, is responsible for the managerial and leadership functions within a patient environment. The ANM functions primarily on evening and nightshift hours to provide operational oversight, consistency and continuity. The ANM partners with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure the delivery of safe, quality patient care and compliance with regulatory standards, and administrative and clinical policies and procedures. The ANM performs managerial activities, and demonstrates effective leadership behaviors including performing evaluations, employee mentoring, coaching, and performance management. The ANM implements quality and safety initiatives, engages in process improvement, ensures adherence to bargaining unit agreements and human resource management. The ANM creates and sustains a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff. The ANM's decisions and actions are based on ethical principles as outlined by the American Nurses Association. The ANM practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators, the ANA Code of Ethics, the Oregon State Board Nurse Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). Strategic Planning: * Assists in development of the department strategic plan that reflects the division strategic plan and nursing's vision. * Participates in formulating objectives, goals and specific strategies related to initiatives. * Assists in developing short and long-term goals that identify the target conditions. * Assists in coordinating the implementation of interventions to meet department-level goals. * Assists with communicating implementing, and evaluating the unit strategic plan. Operational Leadership * Ascribes to systems theory with an understanding that how parts of a system relate to the overall system. * Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of care team members (e.g. charge nurse, code team, RRT) * Evaluates staff's competency and intervenes to optimize performance and ensure safe, quality, effective and efficient patient care. * Promotes and practices patient/family advocacy. * Maintains visibility and open communication with the staff and department leadership. * Communicates plans and decisions to department staff and other stakeholders. * Asserts view in a non-judgmental manner. * Recognizes one's own method of decision-making and the role of beliefs, values and inferences. * Promotes patient-centered decisions and outcomes. * Actively participates in shared-governance structures and promotes decisions made within the governance structure. * Evaluates staffing, scheduling and patient care assignments to assure they are based on role and clinical practice expertise. * Celebrates successes and accomplishments. Financial Management * Monitors department finances according to performance targets. * Reports areas for improvement and implements corrective course as indicated. * Assures the use of staffing tools and guidelines to manage productivity. * Monitors use of premium pay. * Educate team members on financial implications of patient care decisions. * Assists the manager/director in determining department level resource priorities. Human Resources * Uses evidence-based leadership to promote desired behaviors * Develops a high-functioning workforce in collaboration with the department leadership * Recognizes and rewards exemplary professional practice * Coaches staff in an ongoing and progressive manner * Monitors and evaluates the application of practice standards * Collaborates with department leadership to facilitate behaviors that impact safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction. * Resolves and manages conflict to promote optimal outcomes. * Maintains professional boundaries. * Participates in recruiting & retaining highly qualified staff. * Participates in succession planning initiatives. Performance Improvement * Participates in the development of the department quality plan. * Utilizes department data to identify areas for improvement based on assessment and current states. * Monitors and uses data to determine patient care quality improvement objectives. * Engages staff in department initiatives. * Disseminates the impact/benefits of organizational, nursing, and department initiatives. * Identifies areas of risk and makes suggestions for reducing risk and improving outcomes. * Investigates concerns and errors to understand occurrences of errors or adverse events. * Communicates learning locally and through the system to disseminate best-practices. * Supports workflow processes that reduce error potential. Professionalism * Evaluates practice in relation to the PPM and existing evidence. * Sets expectations for clinical staff to exercise autonomy and decision-making authority consistent with scope of practice and performance description. * Advances practice excellence by communicating a clear and consistent message about the expectations for role and standards -based professional practice. * Engages in informal and formal processes of giving and seeking feedback regarding role performance from individuals, professional collegues, representatives, administrators, and others. Required Qualifications * Bachelor Degree in Nursing. * Minimum of 2 years relevant clinical with strong charge nurse experience. * Unencumered Oregon RN License. * BLS issued by the American Heart Association. * NRP issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Compliance with the following: * Code of conduct * Respect in the workplace * Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole Preferred Qualifications Preferred Experience, Education, and Certification * Master's degree in nursing or related field. * Previous management experience. * Nurse executive certification.
